battery on-off switch
I have a battery on-off switch that is connected to the positive cable. My ? is when I'm towing the camper do I need to have the switch turned on so my truck charges the battery. And when I'm at a campsite with electric do I leave the switch on also to charge battery?

Is this battery disconnect provided by Sunline or did someone add it after?
Reason for asking is the emergency break away switch was wired from Sunline up stream of the switch and direct to the battery. So as long as a battery was in the camper, the emergency break away switch would operate as needed and stop a run away trailer. In this case the disconnect switch could be on or off and the breakaway feature still works. If someone added the disconnect switch they may or may not have wired this feature this way. It should be changed ideally if it is not this way.
To charge the battery from the truck while driving, yes turn on the disconnect switch.
When at the campsite and plugged into 120 VAC shore power, turn the disconnect switch on so the battery will get charged from the power converter and the battery will help stabilize the 12 volts on an older power converter.
When you unhook the camper and store it between camping trips, turn off the battery disconnect switch to not drain the battery dead over a few days. The LP detector is always on, some times the roof antenna booster is left on, the light on the radio is always on.
Hope this helps
John

Thanks john
That's what I thought but wasn't 100% sure. My camper gets inspected this week I'll ask them about the disconnect switch if it's after market or factory.

The dealer doing the inspection may not know.
The reason I picked up on this is your model year. The 2004 model year and beyond had the disconnect switch as standard by Sunline. However they may have installed it on some late made in the year 2003's.
Does your look like this?
You can see the breakaway switch wires going in the bottom were they tied to the hot side of the switch
Hope this helps and good luck
John

Mine doesn't look like yours at all. The previous owner must have put mine on. I don't have all then wires like yours mine is just in line with the positive cable. I'll bring this situation to my rv shop doing my inspection .
Thank you.

If that is the case,(on/off switch is in the battery postive cable only and no breakaway wires on it), then it sounds like they missed the point about the emergency breakaway switch needing to be hot all the time.
Ideally the hot wire for the breakaway switch goes on the battery side of the dissconnect switch. Not a hard thing to change depending on where they picked up the power for it. Until then, for sure tow with the dissconnect switch "on".
Good luck
John

John:
My switch was factory installed and I'm pretty sure my break away is tied directly to the battery. I'll have to check to be sure, but I'm almost positive it's on the battery not the switch.

Mack,
Just to clarify, in the event of some confusion, Sunline put the hot wire for the breakaway on the live side, upstream side, battery side of my disconnect switch. Not the down stream side that works with the switch.
They used the switch as a terminal post to latch on the the hot wire heading to the battery verses running that thin 16 awg wire all the way up to the battery post.
Did they actually run that extra wire all the way to the battery? Meaning 2 wires now on the positive post and maybe a 3rd if you have a power tongue jack.

John:
The e-brake wire does go to the "hot" post of the switch. My junction box is on the header right next the switch and the e-brake wire goes under the box to the switch, there's another wire that goes to the battery from the junction box, not sure for what (slide maybe,it's not the jack wire), that I mistook for the e-brake wire.

Mack, H'mm 2 wires to the battery and not the power tongue jack?? That's odd.
Here is mine. The slide has it's own 30 amp auto rest circuit breaker but the main disconnect switch feeds it.
H'mm, you have tank heaters, are they 120 VAC or have some kind of 12 Volts DC to them? That may be a special in your case.

Popped the box cover and the wire was capped off!! Don't have any idea what it might have been for. I removed it, electrician in me doesn't like hot capped wires!!!!

Making sure I get this right, the mystery wire was an extra that went from the battery that then went direct into the plastic box with the evil Phillips head little screws on the A frame header and does nothing?
If I remembered right you bought your camper new which means this was a factory job?

Yes & Yes.....
Only thing I can think of is they started to run the e-brake line to the battery, and then cut it and tied it into the hot side of the cut off switch instead.
We have found some strange/stupid things with our coach. I think a lot of it dealt with being on the line during the shutdown. Our coach was on the line when they shut down for the two weeks prior to the final closure and we actually had a lot of doubt we were going to get it at all.
Jon, I know at one point you said you believed ours may have been the last "custon ordered" coach off the line, any others came out since????

There's another two after, also a 276SR, that was also custom ordered. They did build a few random ones after that on leftover frames (aka not necessarily planned), but I'm not sure if any were custom. None that I know of were.

It doesn't surprise me that there were more after ours, or that they were 276s since they ran in batches. I know my dealer had orders for other models at the same time as ours that did not get made.

True, but they weren't really sticking to batches in the last year, they just built on demand. Except for the Que, they'd run those in batches of 40.
