Axle service costs????

Since I do not have tools to do a bearing packing job I asked a local camper supply/service store how much they would charge to pack bearings and check brakes. The costs to pack bearings came to about $250 but they wouldn't give any estimate about brakes. I know that is like asking where the invisible man is so I thought I'd ask here about what costs I could expect to do the brakes. For instance how about is I need shoes? Or how about magnets?

My brakes have been working so don't really expect much to be wrong but I would like to have a idea of what I might run into, as far as costs go. Am I expecting too much?

Jim,

Shop rates vary, $50 to $100/hr are common. If you find a trailer shop that does work on trailers, they may be a better price for equal to and or better quality work then the local camper store. Or an independent camper repair place with a good reputation.

Parts, heads up the time it comes time for new wear parts. On trailer brakes one can buy the entire brake plate, shoes, springs, magnets and lever as an assembly cheaper than even buying the shoes...

See here. Electric Trailer Brake Assemblies at Trailer Parts Superstore I have bought many running gear parts from them with good success. They sell genuine Dexter parts when it is labeled Dexter. Odds are high your camper is 10" x 2 1/4" brakes. The entire brake plate is on sale now for $25.00. I have no idea how they do that as they have to be making money on it even at that price...

And also a heads up, with genuine Dexter parts being available so economically, do not even mess with the after market cheaper parts.

Hope this helps and good luck.

John

thank you JohnB for a fast and great answer, as usual.

Knowing what something costs makes me feel better about getting this work done. I will for sure try to find a reputable place to do the work and for the money it might be better to replace the whole brake plate anyway while they are down there since I do not know what has been done in the past. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Again, thanks.

Edited to add: Should I consider upgrading to nev-r-adjust?

Hi Jim,

I myself have Nev-R-Adjust and when these wear out, I have a whole new set ready to go on. I have been watching the sales. They really do help keep the braking be as optimal as it can get, all the time until the shoe is worn out.

But...there is always a but... your brake drums need to spin true if not you will have problems with self adjusting brakes. It is very easy to check for by a shop who does this work and if it is off and they have a drum lathe and know how to use it, it is a very easy fix to correct.

Here is a thread of mine showing all this. Sorry it is on Brand X forum...
RV.Net Open Roads Forum: Towing: Dexter Self Adjusting Brakes (long W/pics and details)

That said, if you crawl under and tweak your manual adjust breaks every 3,000 miles, they will not get too far out of adjustment.

Having self adjusting brakes gives you the stopping power performance you get after every manual brakes adjust all the time. Just the manual brake adjust slowly fades away and you do not notice it other than taking more power on the brake controller to try and stop.

JohnB, That is for sure more than I want to go through. I'll try to find a good place to service these axles as is and get what use I can from this unit. My thought is that I may be looking at up to four or five hundred dollars, at the least. What will make the difference is the garage I choose. Hopefully we have someone locally that can do a quality job at a honest price.

Thank you for your help.

Jim...try Edwards RV south on 27...I have had them come to Buttonwood and replace awning fabric..they were $200 cheaper than my local dealer here. Also sent my friends there for consignment sales and they were very pleased with them. I believe his name is Jerry...(??) and Brian.
P.S..how are you guys doing? We will be in Sanford again this year..we are status quo here..lol! Janalee

Hi there Janalee!!!

I follow your posts here and haven't seen any major "problems". That is a good thing. Is your status quo solving on eproblem after the other? Then that seems to be normal for you. I thought you had about given up on Florida. Maybe not doing the loop this year? Sanford is really close to everything so you probably will not need to haul all over Florida as in the past.

Thanks for the post about Edwards. I forgot about them for service since they seem to be mostly consignment sales. I will check with them this coming week.

Yes Jim..we are not planning on 'looping'..lol..staying in Sanford for the third year..unusual for me!..but it has everything we need (including medical for DH) and the people are the greatest! Did you read my post about my TT state inspection last month? Asked my mechanic to pull a couple of wheels to check the bearing grease---and the first one nearly fell off! Bearing shot! So then he checked them all--rest were fine.Just my wallet suffered! As much as we complain about our mandatory state inspections,I guess they are good after all.You must be planning on some travel? Take care and good luck.Wave hello to Sunny Pines for me when you pass by! Janalee

I must have missed that post but it was good you had that inspection, for sure. Maybe my axles are not as bad.

Where will you be staying this time? Sanford is a nice place but more cold than we wanted in the Winter.

Got axles serviced and was very satisfied. Went to Stewart's RV in Avon Park Florida ( Stewart's Mobile Village, Rv sales, service, parys and park. ). A small place with service trucks for "at your place" service. I drove in at 7:30AM and was out by a little after 9:00AM. Didn't need any brake parts since it all looked in great condition but did have to have one bearing replaced. Total bill was $212.00 for servicing four wheels and adjusting brakes by two mechanics. After the four hundred mile trip we felt confident in their work. End result was that Stewart's did a good job in a timely manner for a honest price. I do recommend them if anyone is in Central Florida and needs service.

I went to Stewart's for several reasons. One: Their parts and service prices are a medium cost, not high and not low, so reasonable. Two: Their willingness to set a appointment. Other places wanted me to drop off and let them "work me in". Not professional business service plans to me, especially during this "off season" time of the year. Three: Their attitude was pleasant and professional. Other places had a "take it or leave it" attitude while Stewart's seemed eager to do the work.

They have a return customer in me.

Jim,

Looks like you had good service and you can't beat that. The old saying "Service Sells" still holds true today. Price is not everything.
