Axle on 1986 saturn

Hello everyone, I was wondering what type of axle I have on my 86 sunline saturn? I will be putting new breaks, new bearings, and what every else it needs to make it reliable but I am not sure of the part numbers, thanks in advance.

Sunline Fan is an unknown quantity at this point
Hi Paul,

The axle on my '86 was a Dexter 3000#, but the brakes were Kelsey Hayes.

Kelsey Hayes went out of business a few years ago and parts are somewhat hard to find now.

Troy (Wagonman76) rebuilt his to disc brakes and I think he knew all of the part/model numbers of everything. Hopefully he'll stop in here with the info.

Jon

You might have the Hayes 2500# axle, looking up that is how I found what mine was. Mine actually still has an aluminum tag wrapped around the axle that says Hayes, 3000# capacity. So maybe it's a Hayes 3000# axle, but regardless it has Hayes 10 x 1 5/8 brakes and the funky bearing setup.

I found the Hayes brake shoes discontinued back when I started my conversion back in late 2002. So finding them would probably be a miracle by now.

Here's a recent thread where someone was wanting to redo the brakes. They decided to re-line the shoes, which is probably the most cost effective thing to do. Another option would be to just replace the axle with a 3500# axle and have common brake parts.

But for me I like a challenge and to do something different. So here's the link to the thread where I described my disc brake conversion.

If you do have the Hayes 2500# axle, judging by the rest of your work, I bet you could pull off the disc brake conversion if you wanted. Only expensive thing would be an electrohydraulic actuator. You could just weld on new backing plates and do less work than I did. I couldn't weld at the time but had plenty of machining experience and machines were available.

Hopefully I still have the part numbers and all. I saved all my receipts, old parts, and design info and put it in a box on the porch, including the .540 reamer I bought from McMaster for the wheel studs.
The bearings, races, and seals for the Hayes axle are standard items, but they were in a combination that they don't use anymore. Like the outer bearing from one size axle, the inner bearing from another, and the seal from another. I told Champion Trailers what I needed and they put together a custom package for me for the same price as standard.

Hello and thanks for the replies, armed with the knowledge there might be a tag on the axle I crawled under the camper and found this.

2800 lbs

exc#l##### wheels and tires ( couldnt read the rest)

Philips/Dexter axle

Well not what was expected so just on the outside chance someone had changed the axle tag, I pulled the wheel and sure enough it had the dexter logo and a number.
8-237

So could this be a good thing?

It still might be an odd size. Typically all you get these days in our range is a 2000# or 3500# axle.

The Dexter equivalent of the Hayes 10 x 1 5/8 brakes is a Dexter 10 x 1 1/2" brake. And it shows some discontinued parts as well.

Might have to pull a hub and see just what you got.

Yea I think your right, dexter stopped making this axle awhile ago. Well I guess I will go pull the hub and see what's behind door number 2.

And your disk conversion was very impressive, I don't think I could pull this off on a good day with google and my wife helping me, that was some good engineering, I take it your a machinist? I wanted to be a machinist mate when I was in the navy but wound up being a boiler tech instead, still not sure how I let the recruiter talk me into that one but after six years of 110 degree heat and playing with fire I grew to like the boiler room, at least it was warm in the winter.

Well actually by trade I'm a design engineer for a shop that builds dust-free loading equipment. So that gives me the access to the machines and access to design tools (but there are free versions of cad for home). But I've been thinking up and designing oddball things forever, my work is just something that fits my interests.

I've converted my cars to rear disc brakes, and also my 5x8 Haulmark trailer to disc, before doing the Sunline. The Sunline was tougher because clearances were a lot tighter but I got it to work.

One thing that really helped my trailer conversions was the purchase of two books off ebay, the Raybestos Master Reference Guide (details of brake parts) and the Raybestos Buyers Guide (application data of those same parts). I also did a lot of research on what was out there already for trailer disc brakes and actuators.

Well I pulled the hub, and it turns out I do have the Dexter 10 x 1 1/2" brakes so I got real lucky, even though that axle is discontinued, I can still get the shoes and bearings, so I will be ok for a while until I need hubs then I will have to change everything out.
