Axle and Brake Help

Hey everyone. Ive been searching the forums with no luck or i may not be looking in the right places. I have an 87 Satellite T2462. Im trying to find out which axles are underneath it so I can order the correct brake parts. From the little bit I have found on here, I may not have a dexter axle? but im not sure. and my backing plates may be welded on instead of bolted. (being an older trailer) But again im not sure of this information. I was hoping one of you fine people will know more info than i would and have been in this spot before. I want to just replace the brakes as i dont believe my father ever did them during his ownership of the camper. So i would like to prepare (parts wise) to get it all fixed up before I tow it again. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!.

I'm not sure exactly, but I suspect your trailer has Kelsey Hayes brakes, with round magnets. Even though I think you can get new magnets for them still, you can't get new backing plates. I've heard you would have to replace the axles then, but never heard if that was because the were welded on or if the new ones just don't fit. Either way, new trailer axles complete with all the brake parts aren't as expensive as you think.

If the trailer hasn't had a ton of miles, the linings probably aren't that bad and can be saved. But you won't know until you pull it apart.

This thread may help or at least show you what the Hayes brakes look like. There are some good pics there. They are an odd setup.

http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f7...kes-17672.html

Also, your 87 camper, "might" still be the Kelsey Hayes system. But we have a member in that thread with a 1990 that had the Dexter backing plates welded on too.

So welded is not only a Hayes thing in the early days. It seems the 88/89/90 time frame is when the switch from Hayes to Dexter came.

Hope this helps

John

Hmm, I'm curious now. I wonder if the Dexter setup went hand in hand with the change from 13 to 14" wheels on the single axle Sunlines in 1987.

Good question. I did not know about the 14" wheel upgrade. Eventually we will figure out the Sunline evolution...

The wheel size itself doesn't look much different, but the biggest difference is with the tires. The 13" used such a narrow tire that I'm sure weight capacity was limited, as well as drum fitment. Going up the 14" meant going to a 5-6" wide wheel, which meant using an ST205/75/R14C.
