Awning fabric replacement...

Hello there,
I'm wondering if I should attempt to replace the worn out fabric on my 19' A&E patio awning myself.
The wife and I are pretty handy, but I've never done this. Anyone with first hand advice?
Thanks,
Tom

I installed an awning just yesterday on my old Sunline. Did it completely by myself. I set the awning and tube on my creeper and worked the top of the awning into the rail on the camper, the creeper followed along. Had to roll it up then and place it in the arms, then tension the springs. Overall not too hard.

Make sure you mark the rail and the tube
so you get the new one back on to the same spot. Be careful with the springs. I did mine and it went well. Ed

Thanks for the replies, folks. It looks like I may try it.
The big question is the tension on the springs. UPbuilder, how did you tension the springs? Ed, did you use the same method, or did you leave the roll tube on the rail, and "lock" the tension spring in place?
Thanks,
Tom

I just did mine and you really need to be careful in removing the roller tube off of the awning arms. They are under severe tension. You need to hold the end caps in the arm after you have it securely held by a vise grip plier before you remove the bolt from the cap on the arm. Unwind the cap carefully until all the tension is gone. Count the revolutions as you unwind because you will need to reapply the tension when you’re done. Drill out the rivets from the roller tube cap. Then you can remove the cap and spring to reveal the tracks that the awning cord slides into. This link should help it was very helpful to me. Please be careful that tension could break finger or hand very easy.

Although I am not sure on his advice on tax deductions.

I put the tension back on then bolted the arms back in place with it open. Go on line to replacing RV awning material you will find videos that explain it well. Ed

The awnings used on Sunlines are the exact same awnings installed on all makes of travel trailers. There's nothing "Sunline" about your awning.

First, you have determine what kind of awning you have. Is it a roll up with poles? Or is it a swing out with arms permanently fastened to the wall of the trailer.

If it's a swing-out, you will have to determine who made it. Colorado, Faulkner, CareFree are a few common manufacturers. Should be a label or plate on it somewhere. Once you know the manufacturer, it's a matter of measuring what you have, contacting a dealer and ordering it. You can also order online.

If you can't find a label, post some close-up pics here and one of us will be able to identify it. We need to see how the arms attach to the trailer, the ends of the big roller, etc. Pics need to be in focus, too.

If it is the older roll-up with poles type, take it off the trailer and then take it to someone who does canvas stuff like boat covers. They make up replacement awnings like that all the time.
