Atwood Heating Element Replacement

I have a T-2053 with an Atwood gas/electric 6 gallon water heater . It appears the electric heating element is not working and I would like to replace it along with the thermostats . The water tank assembly is located toward the rear of the camper with access under the bed frame . My question is can I remove and replace heating element without removing the whole water tank assembly through the exterior wall.
I looked through other postings showing the complete tank
assembly removal process and does not look to complicated but before I start this project like to get a better picture on how to proceed correctly.
The heating element was damaged by previous owner who left the voltage on with no water in tank . I think there should be a on/off switch located near tank
but that has been removed .

The 120 v heating element is on the rear of the unit, on mine I have enough room to work on it. The element is inside the tank, so you must drain her 1st !
there is two types of elements, whats your model?

The result are......... used a 1 1/2" socket to unscew heating element , element much shorter than expected ( about 6 inches) so had plenty of room . Element was a Camco 02142 , bought an Atwood replacement , more expensive but hopefuly better quality . Also replacing thermostats and pilot light assembly .
Damage caused by sending power to heating element with no water in tank . I suspect because of tank location it was difficult for previous owner to gain access to switch mounted on tank so he removed it. So heating element was powered up every time the power panel was turned on . I am adding a remote safety switch.
One more problem sovled !
