Aqua Magic IV problems

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help with some questions. My husband replaced the flange seal, the blade seal, and put in a water valve kit in a quest to stop gas leakage from the black tank. My question is this:

This is an exploded view of the toilet. Is part number 29 an actual gasket because it is isted as sealant and it isn't listed as a part that we can get from our rv repair shop. My husband used plumbers putty and it didn't seem to work. What are we supposed to use?

Thank you for any and all assistance.

Anita

Anita,

It may be possible that your vent pipe is either plugged up, or has slid down to the bottom of the tank.

On our black tank, gasses come into the unit when the tank is full. That blocks the opening for the vent pipe and can make the entire trailer stink. It would require you to remove the vent cover to check either scenario, so be sure to have a tube of Dicor handy.

If you decide to check the vent, first make sure the black pipe is up. If not, you should be able to pull it up where it belongs. Once in place, some dicor around it should be enough to hold it in place. Use caution when pulling on it. You do not want to pull it out of the tank.

If you want to see if it is plugged, simply use a hose and run water down it. If it overflows almost immediately, it is plugged up.

EMD Driver,

Thank you for the information. We will check tomorrow. We have a metal roof....would I still use Dicor??? I thought maybe that was for rubber roofs. It's kind of funny because my husband just recaulked that pipe because the caulk had a gap. He used the hair dryer to remove the old stuff and everything. Thank you once again.

Dicor part # 501LSW-1 is designed for use on horizontal RV roof surfaces, including rubber, TPO, metal, fiberglass, aluminum or wood. It's the white self-leveling sealant made by Dicor..

It's some good stuff. This is what we used on Kitty's son's Starcraft fifth wheel, with an aluminum roof.

We checked the vent and pipe and everything is ok. We took the toilet apart and added more plumbers putty and then did a water test and water leaked out around a gasket by the hand flush lever. We are giving up on this toilet and getting a new one because even if we do fix the gasket around the hand flush lever, this toilet was broken for so long that the smell is permanently in the plastic and I have a super nose and I will ALWAYS smell it. In addition, I think if my husband has to take that toilet apart one more time and stick his hands into somebody elses toilet yet again he is going to crack and turn into that guy from the shining.

For the record, when we took the toilet apart into two pc's, we used TWO packs of plumbers putty to seal it back together. One pack wasn't enough and didn't pass the water test so you know that gas would have passed right through. One pack was put into the groove of one side and the other pack was pressed onto the male end. You have to sit on the toilet and wiggle around to seat the putty. Keep working it until you get it just perfect and then put the screws in to hold it. Once you have the toilet together, flip it upside down and fill with water. Any place where water passes will allow gas from your septic/black tank to pass. Ours failed by the gasket for the handle flush.
