AC unit

I purchased an 2004 T-1950 back during the winter. Previous owners said nothing wrong and well, I took them for their word. I decided to do a shake down this weekend before taking the grand kids camping in a couple weeks. Everything works normally except the AC. When I turn it on, it sounds as if the compressor comes on but no fan. When I turn it to fan, nothing. Does this mean the fan doesn't work and a simple fix? Or will I have to replace the entire unit?

Scott, this is really difficult to trouble-shoot from a distance. If it was my unit, I would take it to a competent RV repair shop and have them look at it first before making any decision about replacing it.

Hi Scott

I may be able to help or at least tell you where to look to find out how bad off it might be after you go looking as I had a similar thing happen to me.

Before I type a bunch.... tell us the model and serial number of the AC unit so I can look it up. I thought the smaller trailers had a slightly different unit then the ducted air Sunlines. The model number and serial plate may be behind the intake mesh filter on the inside to of the AC unit. At least that is where it is on mine.

Odds are good you do not need an entire new AC unit. You can get parts for just about anything in the unit.

Do you have a volt/ohm meter? can be any kind even a simple one.

Be back later and let me know what AC unit it is you have.

Thanks

John

It appears that if you leave the fan turned on and go to church....it will be running when you get home from church. Turned the switch to AC, and bam! Cold air. Just checked again awhile ago and it appears the fan again runs.
The fan must have been stuck maybe through the winter months. Thanks for you ideas and help.

You where lucky.... What I was going to type a bunch on is that over the winter condenstation can build up come one hot winter or early spring day. The metal was stone cold down to below freezing and then whamo, it warms up. Then the steel sweats. Dometics have been know to freeze solid with corrosion between the stator and rotor from this.

It looks like this:

That was my prior camper that was stored inside my building. The AC worked great the last I used it 7 months ago. Prior to selling the TT I checked every unit to insure everything was still OK. No fan.... What?? Well after a new motor was installed all worked well. Told the new owner everything that had happend and I would make it good before they came for the TT. I suspect your prior owner may have had the same thing happen.

Also strange my bigger camper lives outside right next to the shed and had no issues....

Some times you get lucky and can knock the fan free from being stuck if it is not too corroded in place I have since learned from others. I was not that lucky...

Glad yours turned out OK

John

I seem to be having the same problem. The fan won't turn on although I hear a little hum when I do turn it on, like the motor is trying to start but can't. So maybe things are just froze up there and I can knock the fan loose. Hopefully. That would be an easy fix...

Hi Roy,

Yes the AC freeze can happen. Condensation sweat and the thing seizes up.

If you are lucky... Unhook power from the camper. Pull the shroud off and try to break free the fan. If it starts spinning easy then you are in luck. If not, well take the motor out and carefully take it apart. Clean up the rotor and stator and put it back together. Or buy a new motor. I think it was like $135 something the last one I bought. I may have been able to clean mine up but I did not want the new owner to have any issues so I put a new one on.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

John

PS. I'm just passing this along in case you did not know, most roofs are not walk on roofs. Have to put a tarp or something down and then use sheets of plywood pieces to walk up there and hold your weight. Rafters are on 16" centers. I use 5/8" thick 2' x 4 ' pieces. Big enough and not to big to manhandle.

Thanks for the help and advice John. I'm not sure when I will get to this project but will let you know how it turns out. Fortunately it was heat that we needed on our trip this week and not the fan or AC. Roy

Roy, if you get to the point of having to pull the motor this is a job that about totally guts the entire roof unit. The motor is a 2 ended shaft unit and works the outside fan and the inside fan. As such you even have to lift out the compressor and move the inside coil to get the fan motor out.

I have pics of the process if you need them so you can be prepared on the way in for what to expect. Let me know and I will upload them. I figured some day someone would need to do this.

Thanks

John

Wow, thanks John! I'll get out there one of these days and see if I can break the fan loose first, to see if I have to dig deeper into it or not. We park the trailer at a storage facility so it's a bit of a process to go get it and bring it home and work on things. So not sure when I'll get it done...

Roy - we had the same type of problem a few years ago. We started to set up on a hot saturday afternoon and i decided to fire up the a/c so we would have a cool place to eat diner...... no fan... just a humming noise. I managed to get on the roof with a step stool on top of the picnic table and remove the shroud. A piece of Styrofoam insulation on the unit had broken and wedged itself in the fan. I removed it, the wife fired up the a/c and that was it ! Good Luck with your fix. Jeff

Well, the fan is working again, but I think it must have resolved itself somehow! I took the rooftop shroud off and the fan was turning freely! So I went down and plugged it in and the fan started right up, just like it should. I guess I should have just plugged it in right away and tried it before getting up there and taking things apart! But anyway, it was good to get the stinkbugs and old bees' nests out of there. So now I don't really know what was wrong. Maybe the hot dry weather we've had loosened it up somehow? Maybe our trip back from Maryland a month ago shook it loose? Although the trip down to Maryland didn't shake it loose... Anyway, glad it's working. Now if all of my problems were this easy...

Sometimes a motor can have a bad spot in the windings, and manually spinning it will move it off that spot and it will run. May never land on that exact spot again, but if it does try spinning it manually again.

Also, if it has been sitting for a while, the motor can stick, and the motor doesn't have enough kick to get it moving. Manually spinning it frees it up and gets the lubrication going and it will run.

Mack
