Question 7 pole connector "center auxiliary"

Hi rv friends,

I would like to let you know that I have been very excited because finally I´m going to travel with my sunline T 2663, my car hasn´t got the 7 pin plug connector so I bought a brand new connector, My question is: in the plug, this auxiliary connector or center auxiliary line, what does it makes ? and where should I take this line in the car ?

thanks for your help,

Best regards from Costa Rica,
Pablo Esquivel

Hi. The center connection was for backup lights. Most trailers newer than 1990 do not have them. If your trailer lights have a small clear lens then you have back back lights on your trailer.

The center pin is an auxiliary pin. OR in many cases, for back up lights.

If you do not have back up lights, then you just do nothing with it. It comes along for the ride so to speak. The wire color in teh 7 wire cable end is usually yellow for that center pin. On the truck side, I really do not know what the color is out of my head. Never had to use it yet. It may be yellow as well.

Some of the very old Sunnies had back up lights, then that stopped It would be a nice feature arriving at camp in the dark.

They also are for surge brakes with out it you would not be able to back the trailer up any hill.

Your brakes work through the brake controller, which gets power from your battery and is wired to one of the wires at your brake pedal. The blue wire is run from the brake controller to the bottom right blade of the tow vehicles plug.

Hi,

Since you have a 2003, there are no back up lights and the 7 wire cord set has the center pin wire in the cable, however when the cable reaches the junction box on the camper, that yellow wire is left open and not hooked to anything. It serves no purpose in the standard Sunline as shipped condition.

And no, you do not have to take that center pin wire to a battery. What mainah was referring to is a trailer with a surge brake, no electric brakes like you have. The surge brake is a hydraulic brake where the master cylinder is in the trailer ball coupler. When the truck and trailer slows down, the trailer exerts forward force on the tow ball of the truck, and the master cylinder inside the trailer ball coupler starts applying brakes on the trailer. This concept works hydraulically like your truck just you put your foot on the brake pedal which pushes the truck master cylinder in and then it sends oil pressure to the truck wheel cylinders to apply the brakes.

If you back up hard and fast with a surge brake trailer, or some times backing up a hill, the trailer brakes come on as the truck is pushing that master cylinder in thinking it should be stopping the trailer and locks up the brakes. To get out of this, when the truck is in reverse that center pin gets power and it works to lock out the ball coupler so the brakes do not come on while going back words.

Now to your thought about the brake lights working the brakes on the trailer, well no not exactly depending on what you where thinking. It is true that the brake lights on the trailer come on when the TV brake lights come on. This is just the red brake lights on the back of the camper, not the actual wheel brakes.

Those brake lights do not power the trailer wheel brakes. One of the wires in that 7 wire plug on the back of the truck is connected to a brake controller in the truck and the controller sends power to the magnets in the trailer wheel brakes. Up inside the truck, you should have a brake controller. Do you? That brake controller is what sends the power to the trailer wheel brakes. If you do not have a brake controller, let's talk as you need one. We can help you with selecting one.

Hope this helps

John

I should have said your camper does not have surge brakes they are mostly found on things like boat trailers but that connection is for reverse lights and surge breaks. Just google 7 pin trailer connections and it will show you what the wires do and where they go on the connector.
