2007 T-1950 Clear Coat Flaking Off at One Spot

Hi everyone,

I searched for info on this topic but couldn't find anything. I have the clear coat flaking off on my 2007 T-1950!!

It looks like it's just in one "small" spot and began just sitting in the driveway because just before that, I towed it at 65 MPH in the rain and the rain would have removed the small flakes which I could remove by just blowing hard on it.

Does anyone have any insight on what would cause the flaking? I am very disappointed.

* What's it made of?
* Is there a repair?
* Should it be left alone?

Any info related to this is greatly appreciated ...thank you in advance.
-Tony

That's really weird, I've never heard of that before. The Krystal Kote is a baked on finish and I haven't found much that will harm it. The paint underneath, yes, but not the coating itself.

You could try rubbing all of it off to make that panel clean. It would probably stand out, but at least the metal is the same stamp pattern as the rest.

Another option is looking for a large Good Sam sticker or something to cover it all up.

Ahhh, Krystal Kote! Now I have a term to search!

Thank you for the advice; I'm not sure what direction I'm going to go on this one. Your idea of stripping the entire section of Krystal Kote is great. I'll just have to figure out what takes it off but not the paint. I figure I could spray a new clear coat on if I get to that point.

I have no theories on why it flaked off that small section and nowhere else - I owned Sunlines before and that stuff is usually bullet proof.

This has happened before and reported on SOC. And it has happened on my camper on the front, up top. The section of white aluminum that starts at the roof line down is the worst. For about the top 12" it is almost gone now. And further down it is starting to spread.

See this post from 2011 http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f6...ote-13184.html

On the second page are pictures of what mine looked like back in 2011 which was the camper was a little over 7 years old then and the camper lived outside all the time back then.

That said, so far mine is only up high. I do not have it down low and it is only having this issue so far on the front wall.

It might be the high sun heat hitting it living outside and the towing conditions it gets exposed to. Don't really know, just is seems to show up on the front wall as reported by others more then other places.

If you use a Mr Clean magic eraser and Awesome it will polish off the hairs of the coating at the edges. It will not take all the rest of the well bonded Krystal Kote off though.

Hope this helps

John

Yep! It was a special baked on coating. Not sure who made it, it seems there are a few different companies with products of the same name, but I believe Sunline did buy the metal pre-painted and pre-Krystal Koted, ready to go on trailers.

I do know a Mr. Clean eraser will take off the paint fairly easily, and not touch the coating. I suppose you could try a blue sponge with scrub pad, aka the less abrasive kind. Put a hose up there and keep the area wet, and just scrub. Hopefully it wouldn't hurt the paint.

Krylon Fusion in gloss white is pretty darn close to the original color, it's going to look different anyway, I guess it wouldn't be the end of the world if you had to respray the whole panel with that when you're done. Clearcoating that will make it look more yellow though, as I've found.

My fear is that you'll get some of the coating off, what's loose, and still not have it all off the panel. So you'd probably end up using acetone or something like that to clean off the rest, and then the paint too.

I can attest too, acetone will strip Krystal Kote and the white paint back to shinny aluminum. If you want to totally strip it, it will do it. Or if you want the Air Stream look it can create that too...

Thanks again for all the good info. I did read that link, BTW. Mine is on the front just to the left of the large front window and it's the 1str section where the siding texture changes.

I'm probably going to wait till the end of the camping season to see if it gets worse on its own and for me to ponder which direction to go. It's great to know that Krylon fusion gloss is a good match!
