1998 T1950 Sunline Solaris Electrical problem

We are having an issue with our electrical. There is an outlet in the cabinet over the sink that the microwave plugs into. There is no power going to that outlet. We have checked all the breakers and fuses and they are all good. There is also a light in the bathroom that does not work. Changed the bulb, but it still is not working. Wondering if this is on the same line as the outlet. Any help on this will be appreciated. Thanks!!

Lights are 12vdc. Microwave is 110vac. Shoreline has to be connected to power for the microwave outlet to be energized.

In your rig, fuses are 12vdc only. Breakers are 110vac only. Keep that in mind as you check out various systems and appliances.

Furnace needs propane and 12vdc.
Air conditioner is 110vac only.
Water heater can be 110vac or propane. Either way it needs a bit of 12vdc for the autostart.
Fridge is propane or gas but needs 12vdc for controls.
Unless modified by previous owner, all lighting should be 12vdc only.

GFI tripped? If it's over the sink it's on a GFI.

Correction on the water heater. It is 110vac or gas and 12vdc. It will run on both concurrently to speed up heating.

Fridge is automatically one or the other based on switch settings.

The microwave works if plugged into another outlet. It's a dead wire running to that one outlet.

Unplug the trailer. Remove the cover of the breaker panel. Check circuit breakers for all connections tight and proper. Maybe try switching them around to see if you have a bad breaker.

If you need a replacement breaker, they're widely available at Home Depot, lowes, etc. Just don't mention the RV.

Power off again, and pull outlet from the wall. Again, check tight and proper connections.

The 110vac side is pretty much the same as residential wiring and very easy to trouble-shoot and repair.

Except for the RV panel and the shoreline connector, it is all standard residential components. Even the three prong RV 30 amp connectors are available at the big box stores.

All connections are tight. We decided to just plug the microwave into another outlet. Thanks for all the help.

You might check the circuits at your outlet with a outlet checker. It plugs in and tells wiring conditions. Maybe you have crossed/open wiring to that one outlet.

I use the circuit checker anytime I plug in to 110V A/C. Never know how wires may be crossed.

Maybe someone has the link for the circuit checker. Maybe.

I have disconnected the camper from 110V A/C, plugged a three wire extension cord into the bad outlet. Turn all breakers to the off position. Then pull extension cord to breaker box to make it easier to use continuity circuit meter to find wires in box. That has told me about a wire broken between box and outlet. Not where but which wire was bad.

I have found outlets to have loose wires so pulling the outlet and visually checking connections might help.

There are two versions of this tester. One for regular circuits and one for GFCI circuits.

GE 3-Wire Receptacle Tester-50542 - The Home Depot

GE GFCI Tester-50957 - The Home Depot

We've had many previous discussions on these testers and their value to RV owners. I consider them to be essential for checking the power post at campground and trouble shooting in the trailer.

Hi John,

The microwave receptacle is usually on it's own circuit breaker in your 98 camper. Sunline did this as the microwave can draw a lot of power on high

If you found another receptacle to plug the micro into, it may be a short term fix. Just a friendly heads up. There are normally only 2 other receptacle circuits. A galley receptacle by the kitchen or the general purpose receptacle. There are a lot of things tied on the general purpose receptacle. If you by chance found that circuit to plug into, running the microwave may quickly trip the breaker of that circuit as it has other loads running on it, like the fridge on AC. The galley circuit has less load, just then you have to watch if anything is plugged in there, a coffee pot etc, the microwave will trip that circuit.

Odds are higher the wire between the breaker panel and the micro wave plug may be intact. The problem may be the receptacle itself or a something in the breaker panel.

It is not too hard in the breaker panel. In the receptacle it can be more problematic as many times they used push in splice type receptacles. Not simple screw terminals. This is the push in type. Do not know what year they started using these. The newer ones have them. Cheaper to wire

Hope this helps

John

Those outlets are pretty common in RV's in general due to space restrictions a box in most cares is too deep to fit in the wall. If the microwave is near the sink it will be on a GFI if there is more than one GFI it any ones guess as to what the GFI covers as far as outlets. GFI do go bad if you can't reset the GFI it's either bad or it has no power. The little 3 light tester is an indispensable tool in an RV first for finding power issues and second to make sure your camp ground outlet is wired correctly. If it is an added outlet I have seen cases where the load center has not been jumpered it is a 240 volt box and if a jumper has not been added only half of the breakers will work. If there is no damage or evidence of tampering it's fairly unlikely that any thing is wrong with the wiring.
