Okay, just trying to stay ahead of the curve and getting some things done on the camper.
On the rear corner, the butyl tape is almost all gone. Trying to decide if I really want to unscrew them and go 100% into it.
We will be living in the camper while our new home in Missouri is being built and I need it to be water proof.
So any advice? Would a good caulk/sealant be okay if I made sure to get it in there really good? Or do I need to just go ahead and set the time aside to pull it apart?
Any help is greatly appreciated and many thanks.
Joe
ETA: Also, along that seam (from front to back on roof edge are, and front/rear sides where the screws are) is that just a standard vinyl screw covering or do I need something specific?

Hi Joesph,
I do not know your older camper so I cannot comment exactly on what you have. Is this the side strip your are talking about? It is a gutter/aluminum strip that creates a lap joint from the roof to the side of the camper. A vinyl strip snaps in to cover the screw heads. Or yours does not look at all like this.
Now to this statement:

Is this on the roof or is it a vertical wall corner?
Regardless of location, the putty tape is the seal. If it on the roof, that will be a leak quick. On a wall corner it can be a leak soon.
There are temporary options but some of this comes down to what are you going to do with the camper after the house is built and what will this patch or fix do to the decision of what to do later?
If there is no water damage, doing the long term fix may not be that bad, if there is water damage behind it, that can be more involved.
Any chance of some pic's so we can see what you are up against?
Hope this helps
John

It is a 1987 Satellite.
The area I am looking at right now is the rear down 'area". Not on the roof, just the left and right rear vertical sides, from top to bottom in regards to the caulk/tape.
I will get some pictures tomorrow.
After the house is built, we'd like to use the camper to get out and about, and it will be under a garage once we get the house built.
One side was already cleaned and caulked and I asked what he caulked it with and he said that is was GE Silicone II. It looks to be solid, but I don't know if that is a long term/short term fix. I will get some good pictures tomorrow when the sun comes out.
I don't think there is any water damage behind the area, but I guess I could look a little further and see.
As for the vinyl screw cover, it is the channel that runs from the front of the camper to the rear bumper. On the edge of the roof.
Thanks

Sorry I did not see the 1987 in your title.
OK if it is the corners and you want to keep the camper, then I myself would do it right.
You take the corner off, now use butyl sealing tape and put it back on. Try "not" to get putty tape. The butyl costs a little more but is worth it. See this post, I redid the corners on my slide. It is not that bad a job.

The caulk, If he used silicone, .... that is not a good thing. It is not a long term caulk in this application. In a few years or less it will start to crack/fold back. And the worst thing, It infects the the surface with silicone that nothing else will stick to it. You may be able to sand it to bare metal and get it off, but it is a bear to apply something else over it. Silicone is good in the right place, just this is not the right place or on the roof.
If you want to use a caulk in addition to the new butyl tape, they make Dicro non leveling sealant for vertical areas. It is made for RV's. It will flex, bond and remain flexible. After 10 or more years, use a heat gun and gently warm it and you an get it off and put new on.
The vinyl strip, I am not sure on your year camper. This is what fits the newer ones. RV Molding Trim
You need to find the right width.
Hope this helps and good luck
John

'87 will use the same screw cover, just in colonial white or almond instead of polar white.
