1986 sunline solaris

I am in the beginning stages of a restore on my 1986 sunline.

As I was ripping up the carpet I found what I assume is a vin plate under the door transition strip. But when I compare that tag number to the Vin plate on the Tongue the numbers are different. Why would this be?

That should not be the case... When we disassembled a T-299SR, the vin plate on the tongue matched the one under the door threshold... SunlineFan should be along shortly, to help you out!

That's weird. They must have grabbed the wrong one by accident. For sure yours is 5668 though.

5658 is very likely the same model, since only the last four and the check digit are different. If it isn't the same exact floorplan, it could be another variation with a different bedroom (2951/52/53). It could also be the Seville version, but I doubt that since they were building Solaris' at the time.

If you close the loop on the 5 it looks like a 6 .... or a 6 not punched completely looks like a 5.

Is the Vin stamped anywhere else on the trailer? Should i put this one back under the threshold, would be kinda bad if i had to be police inspected for some odd reason wouldnt it ?

The VIN was originally in three places- on the tongue, under the door threshold, and on the specification sticker stuck on the aluminum, off door side forward. The sticker, for an '86, almost always is completely deteriorated. However, I don't think you have too much to worry about. I still have the plate from my last trailer from under the door, yes partly because I like to collect that kind of stuff, but also because I laid down a wood floor in place of the lino/carpet and it had to come up anyway.

Keeping it there would probably cause more confusion if anything, but the chances of it needed again are probably slim. It's not like an '86 would be financed now or in a position where it would have to be recovered for some reason that they'd need that verification.

Yes, the VIN# is on the title. When we purchased ours from out of state, the Ohio BMV verified the # on the title matched the # on the camper. The sticker was still readable on the OD front corner, so that's what they used. If the sticker had deteriorated, they most likely would have looked at the tongue. I can't imagine the BMV tearing a camper apart to find the VIN tag under the threshold.
