What is this switch for? - Page 2

Hi Oldray....turn on the switch so it is lit (red), go inside the bathroom, turn on the fan, go out and turn the switch off - see if it shuts off the fan. If not then manually shut off the fan, turn on the main (I can't remember if the 1950 had a light in the shower area, not this one) light and then check the outside switch again.....I do believe it is for the light in the bathroom. If that fails, check the wiring, to make sure someone has not disconnected it.

Oh and we are a real group LOL!!!!! So real, we have many Meet & Greet events every year and some of us have actually met some of our fellow members........check one out!

Just realized i have 2 switch, one near the bathroom door and one near the kitchen sink and that one indicates water heater. Therefore I assume you turn on your water heater with that switch, it is must be an electronic ignition. I will try it today and give you the result. For the switch near the bathroom wall , I assume it is for the same purpuse.
Hoping we will find the mystery.

Hi this is Oldray
I have found the purpose of the 2 switches in my trailer. The one on the bathroom wall is for the light in the bathroom, it is red maybe to notify that there is someone there. The other switch near the kitchen sink is to start the water heater, it's red when on and when the water heater stars, the light goes off, to shut off the water heater, just turn the switch to off.

I lost my previous email, tried to send pictures but lost eveything in trying it, need your help. I have a switch over the kitchen sink, it has 2 mode like medium and hi when I turn it on the lights dim. All I can see, it would be for the furnace blower ( 2 speed ). If someone knows what it's for I would gratly appreciate it.

Hi Oldray,

That 120 VAC home looking wall switch was not original. Some one added or upgraded what was there.

The furnace is 1 speed unless you have something really special. It "might" be that someone modified the HW heater to have a wall switch turn on the electric element, that is if yours has that feature and in a 99 camper it just might. If that is what it is for, I caution turning it on with no water in the heater. It will fry the element in about 20 seconds or less.

I see the tank monitor has a Jayco sticker on it. This too was not original or at least that face plate. The prior owner may have has trouble with the prior tank panel and just bought one from a Jayco dealer.

If you want to figure out if you have an electric element on the HW heater it would be on the back side of the heater. You would see a piece of romex cable going to the back of the heater. And on a 99 it may have a rocker switch on the side of the metal cover on the back. That at least confirms you have an electric element option. It does not mean the wall switch near the stove is for the HW heater but it at least tells you caution, it might be for the HW heater. If the heater is filled with water, then no harm on flipping the switch with shore power plugged in. In your circuit breaker box there may be a dedicated 15 amp breaker that says HW heater. Another lead the heater has the electric option.

The switch is actually three position. Moved to the up position would give power to either the microwave or electric element on the water heater.

Moved to the down position would give power to whatever didn't work in the top position.

Move the switch to the center (doesn't really lock there) and neither of those have power.

This came up a few years ago because a lot of the new Ques sold here in the US were built as CSA spec for some reason. I don't know why CSA has this regulation off the top of my head, but I think it has to do with not overloading park electrical systems.

Wow, learn something new ever day on SOC. Well it still may be partly for the HW heater.

It's getting too cold here to put water in the trailer but will keep a copy of all your replies and try them out in spring. Boy it's fun to see how many people are there to help you. I'm glad I joined the club, I don't feel alone with my problem .

There is a 110 volt cable going to the water heater so, I assume according to all your replies that in fact the water heater works both LP and electric.

Yes, if there is a 110 cable going to the back side of the water heater then you have the electric option.

That switch up by the stove appears to the power enable switch. There still may be a rocker switch on the back of the heater on most pre 2004 models. Most are buried deep under a cabinet or something very hard to get to. Some folks who did not have the CSA option actually wired in a remote switch so they can get to it easier. They flip on the rocker switch then use the remote switch for on and off.

Another thing to look for, look in your circuit breaker box and see if there is a dedicated 15 amp breaker just for the HW heater.

Our 2004 has a dedicated breaker and an on off switch up by the stove for the electric. Not your CSA switch but and actual Atwood on/off switch. What we do so we do not accidentally turn on the heater on electric with no water in it is, turn off our dedicated circuit breaker in the breaker box. That way if the switch up by the stove gets accidentally flipped it does not burn out the element. When we get to camp and I know the heater is filled with water, we flip on the breaker and then use the on/off switch as needed. You may be able to create this same safeguard.

Any idea yet what the switch is for yet? I was thinking maybe for something outside. Maybe power to your outlets or an outside light.

Does anyone have a list of companies that sell used parts or new for the camper.
I also am looking for a owners manual
