T1700 roof

Any one know how the roof is sealed under the aluminum strip on the top edge of the side wall? It's a metal roof and some one has coated the entire edge with roof tar. At some point it had been leaking because I had to replace about a 2'X4' section of floor and stringers and I guess the roof tar was the fix. Any way I want to do it right and get the black tar stuff off the trim strip and seal it up properly.
