Need opinion on fridge shut down.

I have just returned from camping this weekend and was thinking that I am leaving again Thursday night or Friday Morning for a long weekend. Question is should I leave coach plugged in to maintain fridge temp, or should I shut it down to warm up only to plug back in Wednesday night to get it to proper temps again. What are your thoughts? What is best for the equipment? Pros and cons? Looking foward to this forums vast expertise and guidance.
Thanks,
MM

Hi J

H'mm for 3 days of down time it is a coin toss. Leaving it on has merit as if the inside temps are at temp then it does not run that much. By shutting it down and then bringing it back up with it being 90 degrees in side.... will be harder on it. Pending the time of year the coil in the back can sweat and then rust comes. Now that we are in summer, it does not sweat long as it dries up quick.

So....For me in this case I would put the freezer blocks I use back in the freezer to stay froze (actually they would already be there and froze so I would just leave them in) and then put a gallon jug of water in the fridge to actually make it work on something and leave it on.

Have fun camping

John

The last couple of years, if we have a week or less between trips, I just leave it running.

I've been told in the past that the reefers usually die after many years (like 15-20) of a lot of on/off operation. For those that either aren't used often or are left on most of the time, they apparently will last longer.

I'd leave it running. Half of the food items, condiments and such, would not even be moved out for such a short time period in our situation. Even more of the freezer stuff would stay.

We plug the trailer in to 110 when we're between trips anyway, so running the fridge for that short time between trips would be normal for us.

Thanks for the info all, my gut said to leave on. As a kid I remember a friend of my father's telling us that the NYC cabs routinely getting over 250-300,00 miles because the only time they ever shut down was when they needed service. Can't prove it but it is an interesting concept.
Thanks again,
Jay

The only time a light bulb burns out is when you turn it on .

Mine are usually run from March or April thru Thanksgiving, don't know if its right or wrong. But, I want it ready to go "spur of the moment", and I also am too lazy to empty it after each trip just so I can turn it off.
