Hooking into cable at campground
I've looked up info on cable hookups and it's all too complicated! I would like to know how long a coaxle cable we might need to buy for most campgrounds--we just got a little TV and want to try it out at Buttonwood. We usually dry camp and don't care about the TV, but daughter and son-in-law gave it to us for Christmas.......

You won't need much for Buttonwood, but I'd say a 25' would probably cover you in most situations. Extreme cases would require 50'.
If I recall, Buttonwood for me was only about a 5' span...

If a site includes cable hook-up, the cable connect is typically on the same pedestal as the shore power hook-up. So it would vary depending on how the campground has laid out their sites and the positions of the power pedestal.
The location of the power pedestals at Buttonwood vary from site to site. However, if I remember correctly, the back-in sites have the pedestal at the rear of the site and the pull-throughs have the pedestal located more in the middle of the site.
I would say a 25’ coaxle cable would be more than sufficient to handle any site configuration. You might be able to get by with a 10’, but 25’ would be the safer way to go.
Hope this helps.

As mentioned above, 25 feet handles most. I have a 20 foot length that worked every place but a campgroung in Maine we went to in the Fall. The cable was on a seperate post 26 feet away ...duh... Went to a local discount store and got 12 footer for $1, I already had the adapter to connect 2 together.

When we had cable put in the house the guy had a 40' piece of the cable he buried left over. He asked if I wanted it. He put the weatherproof ends on it and left it. It's bright orange so it's easy to see. I have only uncoiled the whole thing once. The way the site was set up it worked better to pull the camper in. I had enough room to maneuver the truck out if I wanted. That put the water, electric and cable hookups in front of the tongue.

For most campgrounds 25' should be sufficient. Of course there could always be a campground that is an exception, but if that happens, play cards or read a book/magazine.

I have NO experience on what's "nominal" for distances at sights, but I can offer that if you have a 50' and only need 5' or 20' (or 26' DOH!) then the 50' will be fine. The extra won't hurt your signal, and if you coil it and get one of those Velcro™ wraps for keeping cables tidy it won't be much fuss.

Nancy,
As with everyone else, the 25 footer does good. If your camper has a cable plug built in, feed into there. Don't forget to turn the amplifier off on the antenna system. If you don't, it will over ride the cable (experience) .

We thought 25' would be adequate, but the first campground we went to that had cable had the cable post way at the rear of the site and no where near the water and electric post.
If you buy a 25' cable, you are guaranteed to need at least 26' at the first site you pull into....

In our years of travel I have only had a couple of times where our 25 footer wouldn't reach. Both times the campground had free extensions available, recognizing their flaw. Most of the time a 12 footer is enough.

This reminds me, I also meant to ask----- what's the large hole for on the antennae "switch plate" inside? I think we need a short coax cable to hook the TV into the "outlet" on the antennae "switch plate" by the bed and TV shelf, but what's the larger hole for?

It's a 12v outlet, same as the accessary one in your vehicle. Max output is 7.5 amps @ 12v. Some small TV's can operate on 12v or you can purchase a 12v/110v invertor to run small electronics. We have two that we use for the kids Game boys while on the road. So.......If you really need TV while dry camping!!!
Yes, you will need a short cable to connect your tv to the cable plate, also remember to turn off the antenna booster (the little push button on the plate, the green led light [between the cable connection and the power button] will go out) when you have cable.

Oh, thanks---now it totally makes sense!!! We don't even WANT the TV, but my daughter and son-in-law got it free when they bought their bedroom set and gave it to us (what would they do with a tiny TV when they've got huge flat screens all over their house!!) Because we'll have cable (usually we dry camp) we want to try it out..... With the schedule at Buttonwood though, it doesn't look like much time to zone out!
