hook-up question

hello everyone... this is my first travel trailer, my question is, when I hook- up to a site with sewage do I open the ports to the black and gray water tanks and leave them open? or do I fill up the tanks and then empty them one at a time.. thank you in advance
Jack

Hello
You want to keep your black tank closed until you are ready to dump. If you leave the valve open you will end up with a small mountain left in your tank. If the black tank valve is left open to drain all of the liquids will slowely drain leaving behind a mess in your tank. After you dump you also want to add at least 2-3 gallons of water to the tank to start with so the solids stay loose.
Good luck Chris

Welcome to the Sunline Owners Club, Jack. Which model do you have?

A black tank should never be left open. Solids and tp are flushed out by a rapid flow created by the pressure of the elevated water, or head, just like in a home toilet. Ideally a black tank should be fairly full before dumping to have enough head to move everything out. We travel a lot and I don't like to be on the road with much of anything in the black tank, which is not anchored as well as the fresh water tank. So we use the campground facilities for major jobs and then just have liquid in the black tank which I dump regardless of how little it is. I always dump a full pail of water down the toilet for a rinse.

The gray tank is dumped after the black as the relatively clean gray water ensures the hose is well rinsed from the black. There should also be a fairly full gray tank for this. I also rinse the gray tank with a full pail of water. For me, the hose is then clean enough to put away although people who really use the black tank heavily will rinse the hose completely with fresh water. Just don't use a drinking water hose for this or contaminate a drinking water tap in any way for the next camper.

There's nothing wrong with letting the gray water run while you're camping. Just close the valve soon enough to accumulate a tank full to rinse the black water out of the hose when you are ready to dump and leave. Most people use more gray water than black, especially if there is a family using the shower.

I also use a flush king every couple of days to back wash and fill the tanks completely with rinse water after dumping. I won't do this at a dump station as it is too time consuming, but we always try to get a full service site on the last day so we come home with clean tanks.

Dumping

Like most people I dump when I leave a campground, black than grey. I never leave my black tank valve open when camping and actually rarely leave my gray open, prefering to be conscious about dumping.

One thing I do after dumping and before leaving a camp ground is to put some water in each tank. This can slosh around while driving and soften up anything in the tank. Sometimes I add some ice to the black tank via the toilet beforeleaving the campground.

Safe travels,

Norm

thank you for the replies, I have a 1994 Sunline Solairs T-2363. we will be going to a campground on the Aug. 13th thru the 16th , it has full hookups ..water electric and sewage. I wasnt sure if I opened the valves and let them drain as we used them , or keep them closed untill they needed to be empty...the last campground just had a dump station, so I did that right
thank you
Jack

Hi Jack. Nice looking camper. Thanks for sharing

I noticed in your sig, the pic will not show up here. You are missing the [/img] ending command after the .jpg.

Hi Jack,

From your pic it looks like your coach is a 1996.

BTW, in your signature, the img and /img commands need to be bracketed on both sides of the code.
It should look like this: and the pic will show up in your sig just fine. (The bold is just to highlight how the commands need to be typed.)

Also, do not put any spaces in the command. Like after or before the brackets. The space to the computer means something and it does not like it in many cases. This is one of them.

Good luck.
