Electical Question

Hi everyone, I wonder if anyone has info on the issue I,m having. I have a 92 Saturn T 1550, and I noticed that my tail lights on the trailer will only work when I connect a separate wire from the trailer frame to to metal on my truck, ie: (my hitch). Is it just a ground problem or is there something else that could be causing it. It's a 7 pin connector, and all the other lights work. Thanks, George

George, it sounds like there is a ground problem in the 7 pin trailer connector. It could be anywhere from the trailer frame through the pigtail, male and female 7 pin connectors, and the truck wiring.

The pigtail on the trailer end should go to a ground terminal on the frame. This is subject to corrosion and is probably the first place to look.

I had a similar problem. There were three ground points in my trailer. There was a ground from the converter located under the rear gaucho couch that went to a bolt at the rear of the couch that goes thru the frame. This rusts and loosens with time. Similarly there's a ground from the breaker box to the frame. Lastly there was a small bus bar in the front storage compartment, lift the driver's side dinette cushion and remove the wooden protective cover over the wires. This is where the hitch's trailer ground makes it's connection to trailer frame ground.

in my trailer everyone of the gound points needed work.
