Can't plug it in!

Hi all. I am looking for some suggestions on how to fix an outlet issue. We have a 2005 Solaris. We were preparing to stay the night, and discovered our outlets were not working. The microwave also seems to be out. All the lights work, as well as the fridge, water pump, and fan in the bathroom. We went through the fuses and circuit breakers. All the fuses seem not to blown, and we reset all the breakers. Still nothing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks very much.

Hi Kathi. The first thing to check is the pedestal that you are plugged into. Make sure the breakers are turned on. If so ask the campground to check and see if the outlet has power. All your 12 volt things are most likely running off battery.

That was my first thought but then remembered that the microwave was not working also and that is on its own breaker.

That was my first thought but with the microwave not working it sounds no power to trl. Microwave is on its own breaker.

Check the breaker on the campgrounds electric box. It may be turned off. That has happened to us before. Our lights were running off the batteries.

That's a good thought. Most of the time when I plug in at a campground the breakers are off at the post. Seems like allot of campers kill all the breakers before they unplug when leaving.

Some panel boxes inside of the campers also have a main breaker (30 amp)

Thank you, all for your suggestions! It did end up being a thrown breaker, just not where we expected it to be. We are all set, and up and running! Thanks, again!

Good morning. I'm a bit embarrassed to say where we found the blown circuit breaker, but here it goes. We have had our camper parked at my parents home. We bought it late last summer in a private sale. We have thus far towed it about a mile. Anyway, the camper is hooked up to the power from my parents home, and the breaker was in the box in the barn. The power goes from the house to the barn, then to the garage, which is where the power cord is plugged in. It took us quite a bit to discover the thrown breaker because we didn't know that there was a second breaker box involved, having checked the house first. We are planning on our first big haul at the end of July. We will venture out from New York to Maine. I'm excited, but also very nervous, having never traveled that far pulling a camper this big. It should be an adventure! Thanks, again, for all the help!

I ran into something similar at a friend of mine's house he inherited from his uncle. There were two panels in the basement and both were unlabeled. We were working our way through the house marking out circuits and we ended up with all the breakers off and the freezer in the kitchen and the window air conditioner in the living room still running!!!

I went out to the meter can to see if I could find a service cable headed somewhere other than the two panels we had. I noticed that the meter can was double the normal size and one side was a door!! Opened it up to find a panel containing four 2-pole breakers, one for each panel, and one for the freezer and one for the A/C!!!

Kathi - I'm going to hi-jack the thread for a minute - but just noticed you are located in New York = see the two M&G in NY in September - one is in Rochester and the other is in Old Forge.

Perhaps you can make one of them.....would love to meet a new member!

No doubt all of us were nervous the first time pulling a trailer. With time, it DOES get easier. Take it easy and hope you enjoy your trip(s).

I have a 3 light tester that lives in the outlet in the bath as soon as I plug in I have a look at it. Do I have power? Is it wired right? They are only about $5 great little tool.

I thinks this is the tester mainah is talking about. I use one too. I have a 15 amp to 30amp adapter on it so I check the power post first, then plug in

These are handy to have.

Hope this helps.

John

Ah yup!. I thought that was why you called your camper a Toy Hauler?

It seems for the first 3 years of owning a travel trailer over a tent or a PU, one seems to be adding "stuff". Gee I can take that, and this... as I have more room. Then come year 4 and, h'mm I have not used that in the last 3 years, suppose I can pitch it....

Joking aside, the little tester I use every campout. And is quick and handy tracking down power or no power on any 120 volt wall outlet. This is one of the toys we need to add in year 1...

Speaking about surge suppressors I have spent a couple of days at the local camp ground repairing lighting damage. Two campers parked side by side with a tree in between were damaged when lightning struck the tree. Both lost their converter/chargers another one a bit further away suffered the same loss it had just been replaced two days before! The 5th wheel had other damages blown fuses and damage to the 12 volt stuff including the fridge controller. If you can afford a surge suppressor get one. We also lost a line fuse that took the power out for half the camp ground but kudos to the power co. they were there in about an hour.
