Cable /antenna hookup

Okay, here's one for all of you techno nerds to solve for me.

While on vacation earlier this month, I stayed at a resort that offered free cable hookup. I ran my coax from the connector at the pole to the connection on the side of the trailer. Now inside, I have coax running from the wall outlet into the DVD/VCR and coax from that into the TV.

The problem I was having was the antenna signal was fighting with the cable signal. I had set the TV on input from cable. The only way I could improve the cable signal was to unplug the coax from the DVD/VCR to the TV and run the signal through the RCA cables that run from the DVD/VCR to the TV on an Audio 1 level, designed as an input for watching tapes and discs, but I still had some interference on certain channels.

Did I route something wrong or do I need to add something to the system? I pulled out the big ole white bible that came with the rig and under the Wineguard Q&A section it listed that they offer a" product RV-7012/7032/7042 that is specifically designed for an external TV signal source." No further description or telling me what it is or does.

I know someone out there has the answer. Hit me with it, (in plain English, please)!!!!

Thanx,

Bobo

Bobo,

Did you have the antenna booster off? I know that sometimes interferes with a cable signal.

Hi Bobo,

The area that you were camping in, did it have strong air signals (i.e., received via your antenna) for the local channels?
Was the interference only on the local network channels?
Was the interference you were experiencing creating ghosts on the TV?

If you answered yes to all these questions, your problem is one of your components is not isolated from the air signal.

Typically the cause of this is your TV does not properly isolate its components from air signals. The ghosts were created by the TV receiving 2 signals at different frequencies, one from the cable connection and the other from the air signal infiltrating the TV’s internal components.

We have an older TV at home that does not properly isolate air signals and we will get ghosts on local channels. But running the signal through the VCR acts as an additional filter.

To determine if it’s your TV. Get a coax terminator and attach it to the TV instead of the cable. Turn the TV on. You should get nothing but static on all channels. You get any type of signal on one or more channels, this will indicate that the TV circuitry does not properly isolate its components from air signals. This is a test you can try at home because you should have strong air signals where you live.

If it’s not the TV, it might be the coax cables you’re using. Try switching out and using different cables.

Hope this helps.
Hutch
