Another trick is to put the camper on a timer and only run the charger an hour or two a day.

To be honest, I haven't measured anything yet John. I was reading above and saw the battery terminals should read 13.5 +/- when being charged, so I wanted to know before I started testing things.
History: I bought the unit last year and it's been in a state of repair and then storage since then. The battery it came with (many years old) died quickly after a couple days of charging, then I left it on for about a week once and the battery got very hot. Battery acid-smell hot. Since that happened I turned the battery off most of the time. I charged it with a garage charger once and it died quickly.
When I ultimately decided the other day to keep this trailer, I went out and bought a new AGM battery. I installed it and haven't plugged the shore power on since. I want to run some diagnostics when I get some time, but I've been busy cutting down some massive pine trees to make a better place to park it without getting damaged. It's a 2006 Sunline if that reveals anything about the type of charger?

Oh yeh, that tells a lot! Does it have a brown cover on the converter?

It should be a WFCO, these guys Home

If by odd chance it is not a WFCO then it would be an American Enterprises if it was close to the 2005 model year. They had float mode too.

At the battery,

Normal charge should be 13.65 volts
Float mode should be 13.25 volts
And boost should be around 14.6 volts. (the WFCO is a probably, the American Enterprise is a no)

A 2006 should have 3 stage charging. It is a "newer" charger. The ones from the 80's and even many of the 90's and early 2000's where the concerning ones.

If yours drops down to 13.25 from 13.6, you have a built in float mode.

Since you bought and AGM battery, consider one of these. Turn the battery disconnect switch off and put this on. It will maintain and desulfate the battery. Unplug the VDC unit when you use the camper and then run off the converter. Neither WFCO or American enterprises of that era had a desulfate mode. But they at least had float.

BatteryMINDer 1500 | 12 Volt Maintenance Charger Desulfator

Here is one place to get them
Battery Maintainers | Batteries, Chargers + Jump Starters | Northern Tool + Equipment

Hope this helps and good luck

John

Thanks John. Here's what I have:

I'm gonna take some readings tomorrow and I'll let you know if it's working properly.

I have a couple of the Battery Tender plus units made by Deltran. Not sure if they desulfate?

I've already had to replace the WFCO 8955 in my 2007. The convertor went up about two years ago. Progressive Dynamics makes a direct replacement that fits in the WFCO case. It was a fairly easy install.

Mack C-85,
Was that the unit that left a sizable black charred mark on your floor or something. You posted pictures of that didn't you?

Happy to report the unit works fine. Puts out 13.7 volts (at the unit output posts) and the fan cycles off if I shut everything off. Battery reads 13.4 turned on with the converter plugged in. I did notice the fan surges (fluctuates) if I only have one light on, but runs steady with two or more lights on. Didn't test the "float mode, really don't know how, other that to wait a couple days with everything off and take a reading.

No charring on mine. The lights starting fluctuating in brightness, then it quit all together.

Yup, that is how you test it.... Wait for the battery to charge to 100% and then it will go into float, 13.25 volt area.

If your does go bad, consider the Progressive Dynamics Mack was referring to and the PD has desulfate mode too. The PD is a really good unit. I have one, upgraded from an American Enterprises (fan where like a cement mixer at 03:00..)

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully it will hold up for a while, I need tires right now.
