I just got a 1996 Sunline Solaris. There was NO battery ont he tongue. The terminals are there though. Is it a reguler car battery that hooks up there?? if not, what kind is it?

Hi, I have had a few campers through the years and have always use a Deep Cycle Battery. It looks like a battery that you would put in your car but is made for campers.

Yes, Woodsfan has it correct. You want a deep cycle battery. Not a car starter type battery.

The normal size battery Sunline used was a Group size 24 battery. You can get bigger ones, Grp 27, Grp 29, Grp 33 but the battery tray and the plastic box will have to be addressed to hold them. Some have gone to 2, 6 volt deep cycle golf cart ones in series to get higher amp hours.

If you are doing most all your camping in parks/campgrounds with 120 VAC shore power then the group 24 size will serve you well. Those who boondock off the grid either bring extra grp 24's and change as need or install bigger capacity ones and parallel them to get more amp hours between recharges.

If you need help in finding some let us know. If you can get a true deep cycle is best, next best is a combo marine/deep cycle.

Yup, essentially a deep cycle RV/marine battery can handle multiple discharges, whereas a car battery is designed to rarely ever discharge much below 12 volts and doing so to one of those will cause it to fail quicker.

Yes, you could probably use a car battery on a temporary basis, but it probably wouldn't supply you with power for very long compared to a deep cycle.
