Gene, you are 100% correct on this. Wiring the GFCI backwards is dangerous.

Yes a GFI wired backwards is no longer a GFI it's an outlet. New ones come with a piece of tape across the downstream connections. GFI testers are a bit pricey but the test button will tell you a story if it won't trip it's either bad or has no power to it. Personally I think every one with a TT or motor home should own a simple three lamp tester that plugs into one of your outlets they are less then $5 there a lot of DIYers working at campgrounds that don't know black from white much less what the green wire is all about.
