Que wheel bearings

Hi all,

I hope this hasn't been asked and answered before. We are about to take off for a 6 week trip from Washington State (home) to South Carolina and back. We estimate we will drive somewhere around 5-6,000 miles in the 6 weeks. We have towed our Que about 1,500 miles so far (one trip) and now it is time to think about wheel bearings. I am curious to know what kind of spindle the Que has. Is it a standard manual packed setup or is it the zerk fitting in the spindle type. I have used both. I currently have a double axle boat trailer with the zerk fittings. It is very easy to lube after each use in salt water. Also, if it does have the zerk fittings, is it necessary to remove the wheel or does the black center insert on the chrome cylinder covering the spindle come off without removing the wheel.

Thanks for any help

Dennis

There is a rubber plug just remove and grease you don't have to remove the wheel.

The little black plug breaks easily, so have an extra set on hand if you plan to regrease while on the road. RV stores stock them and they're cheap.

Thanks both of you for your answers. I will carefully remove the black plastic cap and see if there is indeed a rubber cap on the spindle. I was beginning to fear that no one was going to respond to my question! I do want to lube the bearings and adjust the brakes before setting off next month.

Hi Dennis,

Here is a picture of the "rubber" cap. This is not on a Que, but is on a Sunline. My wheels were off when I took this picture as I was having the valve stems replaced (Had a leaker )

Here's another picture of removing the rubber cap,

Once the cap is removed, you should be able to see the zerk fitting, if you axle has the E-Z lub feature. If you have this feature lubing is easy:

I've been given different instructions on lubing the bearings with the easy lub.
A tech at our local RV dealership said only 3 pumps.
The dexter manual says pump until all the old grease comes out.
Look at page 51 in this Dexter Manual for more information on the E-Z Lub.

The pictures of the hubs look to be the same as I have on the boat trailer, although it is disc brakes rather than drum. I pump about 1/2 tube of grease into each hub at every lubrication on the boat. I'll do the same on the Que. It never hurts to have new grease in the bearing!

Thanks for the help!

I popped the black plastic covers off of the wheel center hub, and yes indeed, the hubs are the ez-lube hubs! Thanks everyone for the enlightenment.

I suppose I should lube Q*Bert's hubs before this year's travels so my question is: What type of grease should I buy to fill the grease gun?

This is from the Dexter manual:

Thickener Type. Lithium Complex

Consistency NLGI No.2
Additives EP, Corrosion & Oxidation Inhibitors
Viscosity Index 80 Minimum

Approved Sources:
Mobil Oil Mobilgrease H P, Mobilith A W2
Exxon/Standard Ronex M P
Kendall Refining Co. Kendall L-427 Super Blu
Ashland Oil Co. .., Valvoline Multipurpose GM

I have been using the Valvoline GM spec in my boat trailer for 3 years. Hope this helps.
