Que Running Lights Not Working

After many years of dreaming about Sunline ownership, we brought home our new (to us) Que yesterday. The long drive from Alabama to Indiana was great, at least until dark when the TV lights came on and we discovered we had no tail lights, running lights or license plate light. All other lighting works perfectly and the emergency flashers got us home safely.

Has anyone had a similar situation? We ruled out the TV as the problem by plugging the Que into another TV.

We're thrilled to be a full fledged club member now.

Thanks

Hi Jeff or Bernie,

If you have lost running, tail lights and if the Que has a plate light, they are all on the same color wire.

Some how that wire may have become unhooked. If there are all out, then it sort of points to something up front where the 7 wire cable ties into the camper wiring as a place to start.

I do not know the Que but track down starting at the 7 wire plug cable to what box it ties into. Here is one off the newer Solaris units starting from 2004 and newer.

If that splice box on your QUE turns up OK then find the color of the running lights wire and start tracing it from that box to the running lights on where it is disconnected.

If you cannot find any disconnections, then do you have a volt meter? Need to turn up the troubleshooting a notch to see where power is and is not when the truck running lights are on. Start in that same splice box to see if the 7 wire cord is sending the power.

You may also want to look in the end of the 7 wire plug. This may be as simple as a bent blade on that one running light wire is bent away and not making contact. Try this 1st.

Hope this helps

John

Thanks, John B. I have traced the green wire from the junction box termination of the seven wire cable and found no broken wire. I think next I'll follow your advice and check continuity from the plug back to the JB.

By the way, the Que doesn't seem to have a battery disconnect switch as is shown in your pic. Should I install one and what is the advantage one?

Again, thanks for your advice.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

If you checked the plug for a bent blade in the 7 wire plug and it is good, then yes continuity checks are the next step. Odds are high that the green wire is somehow unhooked dropping all of them at once. This does not sound like a ground issue as the directional and stop lights are working and they use the same ground in the rear lights.

The battery disconnect, odd yours does not have one. Sunline started putting them on in the 2004 model year, maybe the Que never had them but that is odd... Maybe a Que owner can chime in on this.

If you do not have the battery disconnect then you need to unhook the battery after each campout once the TT is stored so it does not get drained down. Inside the camper the LP detector is always on and then you may leave the TV antenna on and the radio lighting is sucking power too. You can pull the right fuse inside as an option but they are not really made to be plugged and unplugged every campout. As a long term thing fuse pulling will eventually create a problem.

If your battery is inside one of those plastic boxes with the evil straps on the side, it will not take long for the frustration to set in that there has to be an easier way. The battery disconnect is a nice added touch. Until you get one, just unhook the ground cable on the battery. It is safer then unhooking the positive that can spark with a wrench accidentally touching etc.

Good luck

John

Sunline Fan is an unknown quantity at this point
I thought it did have a battery disconnect, but I'm not 100% sure. Did you check by the propane tanks in that compartment?

Thanks once again, John.

There is no battery cutoff between the battery and the junction box. Maybe another member with Que experience can tell me where it might be. I don't have a battery box with straps but because it is one of the first Ques the battery box is mounted high an appears to have to be removed to take the LP tanks out unless they can be filled in place.

I'll check the continuity on the green wire from the 7 pin plug back to the JB.

Jeff
