Wood paneling over existing interior walls?

Hey all, I want to put a thin wood paneling up and stain it for the "cabin" look but I really don't want to pull all the old luan off. Is there any major reason why I shouldn't do this? I am not worried about weight since I have removed several pounds, (whole bathroom, bathroom sink, cabinet over bed, interior walls, septic tank, etc.). Thanks for any info/tips if you have done this.

This is what i am talking about. Shop Murphy 48-in x 8-ft Single Bead Clear Birch Wood Wainscoting Wall Panel at Lowes.com

There are many wallpapers that look like real wood. Easier job and lighter weight, and less expensive.

The only thing I'll ask is, is there any leaks in the original wall system? If you are sure there are none and the walls are all dry, then there is major draw back to what you are proposing if that is what you want to do.

If there is a concern of wet wall or dry rot, then pulling the old luan off will allow you to repair before hand.

Good luck and take some pics along the way.

John

There were some leaks in the corner but I have repaired them and will be replacing studs and wall board. Currently there are no apparent leaks on the rest of the walls. Should I still rip all the luan off to make sure? Am I just being lazy?....

If the wall boar is sound and you want to keep it intact, they do make moisture meter that can help tell if moisture is behind the wall.

I have this one,
Robot Check

And also this one
Robot Check

The pinless help not having to put prick marks in the wall and they can go deeper to seek moisture.

The meter will do good if the wall is wet. If it is dry rot and very little moisture, I do not know if it will find it. My meter did fool me once on dry rot. It said things were OK, but after opening up the wall, I found otherwise. But it was a learning process for me too as if I would of moved around, there were other wet spots that could of given me a indication.

If the wood is good and hard all the way around and the wall board has no musty scent, then odds are more in-favor the wall if OK.

If it hard to get a hard and fast, It's OK or not in some cases.

Hope this helps

John

unrelated

Hi Guys, This is unrelated to your post, but add to your information about replacement panels for my 1985 T1350 Saturn..... for others seeking info.

We had a leak 2 years ago. We shopped around and luckily we found the a close PATTERN to replace our damaged panel at Home Depot. Obviously no RV dealers stock such things any more, so we lucked out. Our opinion, you'd have to look very close to see the differences...whew !!! (at the time). Our goal was to keep the TT as original as possible. The first 3 pics was where the damage was. The last 2 are the repair. We replaced a couple of studs too.
The good thing about replacing the actual wall, is finding a previous owner's incorrect wiring. I relocated the AC outlet and added a DC outlet down below where the table would be. Plus we removed and resealed the windows.
Having never done a task like that before I was a little nervous. But we knew something had to be done. roll up the sleeves and go for it. Took our time and now we know the wall is mechanically sound. The pattern is not perfect, but we're happy with it
