Upgrading my speakers in my TT

Good morning all, I need a little help please. I would like to upgrade and change my speakers in my 1997 2970TT. For the life of me how do you take the white covers off without breaking them?? And does anyone know the size of the speakers.

Thank You,
Eric

Just twist the covers off. If that doesn't work, try getting a small screwdriver under the edge to pry it off. They are a little tight on there.

The speaker itself should be held with three square head screws. The hole in the ceiling will be pretty big, so plan on a big speaker or some type of patch. The speaker size is just about what you see looking up, maybe minus 1/4" for the plastic cover in terms of diameter.

Eric,

The speakers are 5 1/4 inch round.

Bobo replaced his OEM speakers with Polk coaxial speakers that he got at Circuit City and was very pleased with the results.

Search on "stereo speakers" to see various posts wrt replacing the OEM speakers. Here's the link to one post that I got from this search.

Hope this helps.

Mine should be about the same as your '97 has.

I just gently pried the plastic cover off with a putty knife; slipped it in between the ceiling and the cover and just levered straight down. The cover came down about an eighth of an inch and then it just lifted away with my hand, exposing the speaker itself.

Those are standard 6" automotive loudspeakers, and you can find decent replacements that'll fit in the same diameter cut-out almost anywhere they sell aftermarket automotive audio. I'd look in Wal-Mart first and then maybe Circuit City or Best Buy or Sears.

One thing to check before buying new 6" speakers would be the depth available to you in the cut-outs. I suspect there are some great speakers out there that would be (sadly) too deep for the space in the ceiling.

Let us know how it goes.

The Polk coaxials that I installed had plenty of depth space due to the thickness of the roof insulation. The only modification that I had to do was that the OEM speaker had six mounting screws and the Polk's had four. You will not have rock concert sound due to the amplifier in the stock radio, but the quality is quite a bit better, especially in lower volumes. A lot more bass tone also. At night the Mrs. puts in a CD with soft music with birds singing in the background. In the AM, I turn off the bedroom speakers and enjoy some jazz with my morning coffee.

If you are really into sound quality, I suggest you might want to replace the stereo with a better quality automotive radio, maybe invest into XM or Sirius.
