T2363 Front Carpet Replacement

The carpet in the rig was in pretty rough shape. A few nasty stains that wouldn't come out with any solvent I tried, and overall the carpet just reeked of dog. I picked up a few yards of an inexpensive Berber from Home Cheapo and got to work.

First, a shot of how it looked when I started:

Tore all that out and installed a Flexible Carpet Bar to give a nice clean edge (expensive stuff at $2 a linear foot!):

Laid in the section, started stretching and tacking it down:

Trim the carpet at the bar, and beat it down:

So the floor looks good now. But that carpet you can see under and around the jack-knife sofa no longer matches. Out comes the sofa!

Pull off that carpet and wrap up the wood in berber:

Put the couch back and here's our new look!

I didn't bother replacing the carpet in the storage area. That's just going to get stained up regardless.

I need to snap an up close picture of the carpet. I the pictures it appears to almost clash with the sofa, but that's not the case in person.

Going to do the bedroom also, but that'll be another post as I found some rot when I tore up the bedroom carpet.

Nice Job!!

Looking good and thankss for sharing with us. Seeing what others do with their camper is one of the neat parts about Sunline Club.

I also see you have one of those 1 gallon super suckers. (Shop Vac) I bought one last year and use it all the time for TT project clean up and the vechiles. Works great. Nice and light, can suck up big stuff and it truley works.

John

Thanks!

I just picked up our 2653 at the RV place where it spent the winter. We bought it in November based on the floorplan and the fact that it was a Sunline, but there were some things that had to be done to it. And we just never realized how bad the carpet was. Mostly sun faded and a few spots where someone spilled something that bleached out spatters of spots. But mostly faded. So once we replace the hot water heater and the locks and make sure that everything works in real time, it will be time to tackle that rug.

Now, are the rugs installed with those tack bars? Or are they glued?

Thanks again for your play by play. Makes everything so "do-able" to see that others have tackled these projects too. So much less mysterious!

Thanks, Everybody!

I'll have plenty more picture of the rear once I get it apart to deal with the rotten wood. I'm sure there will be plenty of other projects as well, I'm already thinking about placing a small LCD TV on the side of the refrigerator cabinet.

Quetse, I picked up the little shop vac from Wal-Mart. They go for around $20. I've also seen them at Target. It doesn't have the power my full size shop vac has, but it's much easier to use. I actually bought it for use in the cars, but it gets grabbed a LOT.

Marylyn, Sunline had the carpet secured only by staples. About 3 million of them in fact, lots of fun to pull out. Because of the small space, I opted to install with staples as well. Only the carpet bar has gripping teeth and that edge did not get stapled. The trick is to use a 1/4" crown stapler, so the staple doesn't crush the pile of the carpet and give away the location of every staple.

When I lay the rear carpet down, I'll try to get Kathy to take a few "action shots" to show how I stretch and staple it down. I'll also try to get a few of the trimming process.

Well, I tore into the rear and found the source of the leak.. the roof membrane was installed incorrectly allowing water to get in and make it's way down the wall.

The entire bottom of the rear wall had severe rot, and about 12" of the door side wall did as well. As of today, that's all been replaced. I'll have a bunch of pictures posted up in the repair forum in a day or two.

Now to figure out what to do with this roof.. it's currently tarped up until I figure out what I'm going to do.

Frank, do you install carpet for a living? That final picture looks very professional. That's one job I'd never attempt by myself.

One question I had was did Sunline put the linoleum all the way accross the floor under the carpted area?

Just wondering because we are considering pulling out our carpet to just have the tile floor. We personally hate the carpet as it traps so much sand and would just rather have the ease of sweeping the floor clean in a few seconds time each day.

Thanks and great job

Thanks for the compliment!!

I actually work in the information security field for a very large bank. Officially, I do "Threat Intelligence and Analysis." I'm just a real hard core do-it-yourselfer. Never paid anyone for any work, and hope I will never have to. I get a lot of satisfaction out of doing the work and seeing the end result. Pretty much do it all - carpentry, trim, drywall, electrical, plumbing.. if it's in a house or part of a car, I can fix it. Cars are also a big hobby of mine, I like to tear them down and rebuild.

The carpet did stop about 6" short of the couch. Like Jon mentioned, it is littered with staples, so pulling up the carpet and using the linoleum is really out of the question.

That fluffy edge Sunline used certainly holds the dirt. I can't put into words how much "dirt" was trapped under that edge when I pulled it up. To prevent that from happening, I used that flexible aluminum bar. It gives a solid edge that sits flush onto the vinyl floor, so it should not trap anywhere near as much dirt. Had I known I was going to end up rebuilding the rear of the trailer, I would have ripped out all the flooring and went either all vinyl or maybe some laminate.

I *just* finished up the bedroom about a half hour ago. Got lots of pictures, which I will post as soon as I have time to resize them and get them up on the website.
