Switching from 15x5" rims to 15x6" rims?

Our flat tire on the 1st Trip left us with a damaged rim and a marked up rim on the same side. Both are the standard 5-inch wide 15-inch rim.

Looking at replacment rims, I see they have 15x6" rims. They have a higher load capacity than the 5-inch ones... 2050# each vs. 1820#.

1st question: Can I swap over to the wider 6 inch rims and still use the ST205/75D15 tires I am buying?

2nd question is: What would this do to my trailer's ride height, if anything?

3rd question is: Gee, can I go UP one size tire to the ST225/75D15 tires?

Tires

Dave and Cindy,
I don't know the rim limitations for your 205 tires. Ask a tire shop, or may be you can find it on the site of the manufacturer.
If there are no interference issues, going to 225 should raise your coach about 15 mm.
Here is how I arrived at that:
(225 - 205 = 20. Section height to width ratio is 0.75, so 20 x 0.75 = 15 )
I am a newcomer and just browsing the postings here, so this is a little late, but FWIW.

I'm sure others will chim in, but here my 1.5 cents worth.

Some tire manufactures have websites, which will give you the recommended rim width for a given tire size. you might want to check that out.

That being said, before buying tires last summer for my sunline i thought I saw a chart indicating the 6 in width rim for 225 75R 15, the size I was considering for my trailer. I have the 5 in rims from the factory, and didn't want to buy 5 rims so I stuck with the 205 75R 15 same size the factory put on.

Good luck and Happy Camping

We've run 225/75/R15 'E' Rated tires on our 15x5" rims for over 8,000 miles now. Not that I'm telling you it's what is supposed to be done, but every single tire shop we talked to said it wouldnt be a problem and it hasnt been so far.

We couldnt find 205/75/R15 tires in anything higher than a 'C' rating and if you can go up to an 'D' or 'E' rated tire, why not do it just for the extra plys.

5" v 6" rims

emam,

The 5" rims are rated for 50psi and the 6" are rated for 65psi. If you are going to put on a higher load range tire or the larger 225,s, you're probably better off with the 6" rims. I replaced the tires on my 2553 with the higher load range "D" Denman tires on my 5" rims but these rims have rust on them and I will replace them with the wider rims.

Joe

Hey Joe, when it comes time to replace the rims themselves, I'll probably move up to either 6" rims or just make the swap to 16"x6" Aluminum rims all together. I really like the looks of them and they'd probably save in weight a bit plus add to a higher rated tire

That will be down the road though
