Sunny Pit undergoing remodel

We went over to pick up the backhoe so Gary could start to "re-model the Sunny Pit". Pictures of that work in progress to appear soon. Quite a few trees removed this evening.

And now it is supposed to rain all day tomorrow, what a bummer.

OH, and "I" pulled Sunny out of the "pit" and maneuvered it into position so "I" could back Sunny "UP" our driveway for the first time today, YEAH !!!!
And we will post of photo of where I parked it Gary did help guide me

Kitty

As promised, here are some pics of Gary working on the Sunny Pit remodel. This first pic shows the railroad ties in the pit that we currently place Sunnys' tires on so that we are level.

And now the digging starts:

A lot bigger than I thought! I moved dirt for 10 hours today and STILL didn't get done! Biggest problem, was the downpour we had... You should see our front yard now!

Hi Gary,

Looks like you have a good construction project going there. Nice size machine too.
Are you taking about 6 feet out by the looks of it off the entire bank the full length of the pit?

You going to cut all that up for fire wood? (I can feel your back now...)

I see the land of red dirt still shines through. Yes, it always takes longer then one thinks. A snafu or two along the way always seems to crop up too.

Good luck your doing good.

John

I don't think it's quite 6'.. I tried to dig just below what was done before, to allow room for plenty of stone. My biggest problem this weekend, was the rain. It took me twice as long as necessary, since I spent a lot of time spinning and sliding around. I had to take several loader buckets that weren't full..

Since we don't have a wood stove, we don't need it. I put it all across the road and gave it to our neighbor....

Don't even get me started with the snafu's! I broke one window latch on the backhoe and ask Kitty about her little "Issue"!

When this "Project" is finally done, we'll have a 26' x 41' Sunny port that will have room for her son's boat & trailer beside Sunny.

The wind and sun we had today, really dried a lot of the mud that I was playing in... I asked Kitty to take another picture from the same angle as the one below, so you can see how much dirt and rock I moved.. Hopefully, she'll be able to get a pic of the new "Mountain" I made with it...

The site work on the pit is now officially 95% done! I still want to put a retaining wall across the back and maybe some steps down into the pit... We had four loads of shale brought in and now have 6" of drop in elevation back-to-front. Here's a before picture, showing the 344SR in the pit:

Here's the after picture, with both the 344SR and the dually in the pit:

We also marked and squared up, where the carport is going. The deposit on the carport was made today and we'll have it up, as soon as we can.

Backing the 344SR in place is a bit more challenging, since the elevation makes the ends of the truck bed rails just barely comes in contact with the underside of Sunny. Hopefully, one more load of shale will help feather out the rise a bit.

This picture was taken after I lifted the front of Sunny up a few inches, but you can see what I'm talking about..

Wow Gary, you really open up the pit width....

Yes, I see the truck bed rail angle issue. The hill picture is deceiving. The truck does not look that much down hill but I remember Kitty's driveway which is about a 30 degree angle. Maybe even 40 degrees...

Good luck and thanks for sharing. Cool seeing what you are up to...

Is there a level spot in WV? I bet even the goats live at the bottom of the hill.

Spot looks big enuff. Maybe pull straight in and then spin around to unhook?

Your right, there is "NO FLAT" in WV, well, except maybe on tires.

The pit is approx. 28' wide x 42' long, not counting the approach area. We are getting another car/rv port from TNT Carports out of North Carolina. It will be 26' W X 40' L.

We have planned on that giving us enough room to have the door open, have the slide out plus room to walk around Sunny and work on whatever needs to be done. The remaining width will house my sons boat.

SO, hopefully, before too long we can call TNT and tell them we are ready for them to come install the port (gotta "dig" up the rest of the $$$$ )

The pit has a shale surface that was packed down with a vibrating roller, so hopefully it will hold up well.

OH, probably doesn't show in the pics BUT at the entrance to the pit there are overhead wires, but since our excavator took out the phone line, the other wires seem to be high enough as I watched them when Gary was putting Sunny in the pit. No big deal about the phone line as none of us have land lines anymore anyway.

Now that's not exactly true. The problem is in W.Va., all the flat spots are already taken.

Wright,

You certainly are correct, as we certainly did NOT get any part of a "flat spot".

It's a wonder our trucks & Sunny don't lean to one side going down the road.
