Replacing Factory Wallborder

OK, after being pretty sick most of the week, I feel good today SO, I am thinking about going to "Lowes" and look for some new wall border.

Hey JohnB, I'm planning to finally do another mod even thought this one won't require that I round up my power tools, it will still be a mod .

I am not sure why Sunline put a green border in the Sunline with the beige(ish) colored walls. "IF" I don't find anything I like locally, we "might" be hitting Elkhart the end of July for 2 or 3 days and I'll look there.

HUM, I wonder "if" Gary would like some border that I have, with cats dressed as gun toting cowboys

Kitty

Hey Kitty, glad to hear you are feeling better.

Someone who has replaced the border, I can tell you the best way to remove the old stuff is to use a hair dryer to slowly heat up and soften the adhesive. What every border you decide to choose make sure that is as wide if not wider than the existing as it needs to cover up all the old adhesive residue as you probably won't get it all off.

On a side note, the border we got in Elkhart is peel and stick. In other words is already has the adhesive applied to it and you just peel off the backer and then just place it where you want it and press. Very easy product to use apply.

Kitty,

I heard through the grape vine you where "Mod" thinking again. GREAT!!!

Glad your feeling better. The bed room boarder, yes I know. We happen to be in the unique situation to have 2 model 2004 Sunlines, one built in Oct 03 (T310SR) and one built in May 04 (T2499) and both have the Fern Blue interior. Sunline tweaked the colors and patterns slightly over that model year. Or the May 04 one was tweaked to the 2005 package.

Cindy maid all new valance covers, curtains, ceiling vent covers out of a very pretty light blue stared pattern material. They really dressed up the bed room. 3 windows and a door in one bedroom, she had her work cut out for her...

Then came the boarder. The T2499 boarder was lighter in color and the T310 was well, darker. So we hunted for almost 3 years to find boarder that would match and be lighter. We found it at Menards.

The before:

The after

The before

The after

To us, it sure matches a lot better.

Now to apply, I was worried about trying to get off the old and not lift the wall board vinyl under it. Ours was planted down good and no loose edges, so I left it. I really do not know if I would of pulled up the wallboard vinyl or not. I say vinyl as it is some kind of really thin almost plastic paper glued to the luan paneling.

I was also concerned about the paste on the new boarder. It was normal home interior pre-pasted. The concern was can it hold up to the temperature extremes the camper sees from 0 to 110 degrees and in and out of levels of humidity. So far my fears have not come true and the camper has seen those extremes several times. I have the water trough from doing home wall paper and did the soak for a few seconds in warm water then put it up and fan it out. From the dates of those pics, minus about 1 year, (took me that long to takes pics...) it is holding well and no lifting at all.

As Trailblazer said, we had to make sure ours was about 3/8" to 1/2" wider then the original so it would overlap the old. And that the pattern and paper was thick enough to not let the old bleed through.

So far we are Happy Campers from this mod.

Good luck and don't forget to take pics! And share....

John

PS once you get to feeling better then go for the adrenaline rush of mods with "power tools"

Bill & John,

Thanks for the useful tips. I do know that our wall boarder is the self-adhesive type. Got my Lowes fix today, as Gary had to go there for some electrical "project" stuff. I almost ran him over with the dud of a mart-cart that I was using. Well, trying to find wall paper border in there was "Oh, we have books, you look thru them and we order what you want". Not able to find any local places that now "stock" wall paper border. Will have to rely on getting samples sent to me from online companies, or maybe make it up to Elkhart this summer. We have a diesel truck Rally 4th of July weekend in Tecumseh, MI, but still aren't positive we are going to attend, might just have to go to Elkhart, and maybe even Dublin, OH if someone might be around .

OH, so many mods, the ideas could be endless.

I do believe, as my health permits I will be out there removing the existing wall border, I'd rather have none than what is currently there.

Kitty

Thanks for the ideas of other places to check locally for the wallpaper border. That will be on hold for a while again, as I have my liquid chemo tomorrow, then start 2 weeks of chemo pills tomorrow night. Won't have much "get up & go" for about 10 days or so.

Keep in mind whatever you glue, staple, attach or hang on a trailer wall will make the interior visually smaller. That's why Sunline used so much glass on cabinet doors and put mirrors everywhere.
I know tastes are different and I tend to decorate (or not) in what I refer to as "early monastery." Walls left uncluttered, or unadorned if you prefer, let the eye pass to the windows and, if they are left unencumbered, beyond to the scenery outside.
Here is the most cluttered, decorated corner of the TajWeHaul. Sunline put the frame on the wall so we had to leave it but with a fresh "do."

So the option of removing "stuff" has artistic and aesthetic merit, say I.

Checking in with my 2 cents,
Teach

How did you get it off?

And yes, it does look better without it... or at least a different pattern.

Hi John,

I used a "blow dryer" to heat the border up, and slowly pulled it at an angle and it came off. I will need to wipe down where it was with some goof off or goo-gone because there is a little bit of sticky residue on the wall. But, all in all I really like it with the border gone. SO, as my health permits, I will be removing the rest of the border that is in Sunny. AND, I will NOT be replacing it!!!

You do need to be careful if/when the border crosses the seam tape, as you don't want to heat the seam tape too much.

I had taken a good 2 hour nap before I went out into Sunny to do this, and the project really didn't take all that long, nor was it real difficult, BUT by the time I was finished, I knew I need to come in the house and rest.

Teach, that camper couch quilt looks especially nice and I'm sure that is not from Sunline. Is that a Penny special? I know you have posted her fine work before.

Oh, and what subject did you use to teach? You have a unique way of creating/arranging words... And you can flip in and out of this mode pending the conversation back to street tak'in...A unique quality that is noticed and pleasant to read.

Yup, that was exactly how we did ours. One hint though, don't let the blow dryer heat up the wall border too much otherwise it will soften the vinyl paper behind it and start to stretch it. Don't ask me how I know.

Good job. It looks good.

Bill is correct, you don't want to heat the border TOO much as it can/will also heat up the wall paper and can make it "bubble up". Ask Gary about this !!!!

I also preferred to pull the border off at an angle to hopefully avoid pulling the wallpaper off at the same time.

I wonder if there is something simple that will free the old borders. Like the window tint in cars can be taken off with ammonia water, there might be some glue cutting solution for these borders. One place claimed using vinegar water would free the borders. Might be worth a little experimentation.

Edited to add: Another hint is to use warm water at the bottom of the border to loosen it. Then use steam to finish. Work from the bottom up.

This was not wall border that is put on with wallpaper paste. It is self-adhesive wall border.

Kitty, I know it is stick on but if something cuts the glue it should release the border without harming the wallboard, maybe. Is the border plastic or paper?

Like the window tint on cars is put on with soapy water that activates the glue and to remove it the ammonia water mixture cuts the glue loose. It could be just a matter of finding the right release agent.

The border is paper with the plastic self stick backing. It really was not that hard or MESSY to remove, just need to be careful with the blow dryer and pull the order off at an angle. There is really very little adhesive residue left on the wall, so a little goo-gone on a rag should handle it nicely. Might be able to get back out there tomorrow, depending on how I feel.

I REALLY do like the "no border" look.
