Radio in T-1550
My 83 T-1550 doesn't have a radio. I'd like to add a 12V car type so I can listen without 120V power. It seems I always forget to bring the portable.
Anyway....my question is....where exactly would I put it? I know they were optional in later models, does anyone have a 1550 with a factory radio? Pics would be great if anyone has them!! Also - where to put speakers? I know there's enough unused space to put them just about anywhere, but what works for you, or the factory?

Hi Opie,
First of all, the factory location for the speakers would be on the ceiling, not in a cabinet. This would be nearly impossible to do without tearing the whole trailer apart.
As for the radio, I'm not totally sure. I know the cabinet bunk was optional in later years, so it could have been mounted in the back in the center. However, I think the location with dual cabinet bunks would have been on the side of the upper kitchen cabinet, just inside the door. So basically just up from the water pump/porch light switches.

I installed mine in the lower cabinet, to the right and beneath the switches. It is a little harder to access but is high above the pots and pans so doesn't take up any real space. I felt the top cabinet would lose too much space.

Where did you pull power from? I went with the top cabinet, but I'm having a power looping issue causing a lot of feedback.

Opie,
I tapped in to the power going to the switches. No problems in several years.

Here are photos of the radio install. Note how much space is between the pans and the bottom of the radio itself. I could shield it more but we've never hit it with anything yet.

I ended up wiring directly to the battery with an isolation switch to clean up the power issue, then I got some low profile car door speakers and mounted them in the upper cabinet, since I had no pre-wired locations. I then built a small enclosure for each side, total loss of space was about 1-1/2 inches on each side. Next time I pull her out, I'll try to remember to snap some photos, but since we are going on a cruise this year, it may be a while before I get her out of storage,

I had bought 2 sets of speakers from Radio Shack, very good quality, and I use one set inside on the shelves (see photos) and one set I plug in outside. I like my music

I' d like to add a radio to my '90 T170 as well. I see stickers on ceiling for the speaker wires but not sure where they lead to. Maybe into the front upper cabinet above the table?

If you open the cabinets above the sink there is a divider between the two doors fish around in there and you'll find the wires they actually go through a hole into the cavity under the cabinets where the lights are mounted.

When we got our T1700 I decided that there was no way I could not get by with out my tunes. It just my wife my self and two Great Danes and try as we could we could not get either one of the Danes into the bunk. I removed the center fold up section from the bunk fixed the front up right and installed a nice new JVC every thing stereo USB, iPod, CD AM, FM, front and rear audio inputs and a remote right in the center. The rear audio input is rigged to the TV so we have great sound for movies also. This gave us a good deal of storage space to. I have never been a fan of plain old door speakers so I modified a set of nice computer speakers complete with a sub woofer to run on 12 volts. I power the speakers through a rely via the amp out lead on the stereo the sound is outstanding and amazingly the speakers only draw 8 watts so the entire setup is powered from the available lighting wiring.

I can say for fact because I have never seen a radio installed but I think it hung down under the cabinets, any way there is a more then ample amount of wire that is stuffed down in the lower hole maybe 6 feet or more. If yours is like mine the screens are installed from the inside you have to take the metal frame around the window off to replace them.
