Quieting noisy water pump

Over in the RV forums, I found a few posts on this topic and the general consensus was that the best way to quiet a noisy water pump is to lengthen the supply hose from the pump to the water system. This cuts down on the vibration that a short hose (especially of it contacts any walls) transmits. One person who provided photos and a video on this said he used a 25' hose. I hope I could achieve the same goal with a shorter length (15' maybe?) since I don't know if I even have enough room to put in a 25' hose in my 2499.

My main concern is with the long-term integrity of the hose. I don't want to have a water leak some time in the future. Does anyone know if a Camco or other brand of fresh water hose normally used outside the camper would be the same quality as what is used inside? In searching fresh water hose, I don't see any distinction.
Thanks,
Rich

Rich,

I am pretty sure they mean inches and not feet.

ShurFlo sells a quieting kit that consists of two pieces of pressure flex hose 36" long each with the proper 1/2" fittings for the pump. You can probably buy the same pieces at Home Depot or similar in the plumbing aisle. They're used for sink supply lines in homes.

Steve, I agree, 25" would probably be more like it, but if I could find the video again I'd post it here, it sure looks like 25 feet!

I'll be going to Lowes or Home Depot today.
Thanks,
Rich

HD and others offer braided flexable water hoses in various lengths they are standard 1/2 " plumbing sizes and should screw right on to your pump that's what I'm using on mine.

My pump sits in a wooden T shaped frame that is sitting on a soft rubber pad and joined to the plumbing on both ends with flex hose. It also is connected to a 2 gallon pressure tank and I only hear it when I'm in the shower directly above it.

Yesterday, I picked up 5 feet of braided clear plastic hose from HD. It's 200 psi rated (I noticed the Pex tubing in the camper is labelled 160 psi, so the flex hose I bought is rated higher.) but the white, braided hose attached to the pump has many more strands of reinforcement than what I got at HD. I didn't see any rating stamped on it. It just seems like a more substantial hose.
I plan on coiling the 5 feet of hose inside the wall between the shower and the bedroom since there's space there with an access panel in the bedroom.

I also plan on stiffening the 1/8" access panel and shower wall with some thicker plywood and adding insulation to that. These panels probably act like sound boards in a piano or guitar, projecting vibration sounds.

If I cut the sound in half, I'll be happier.

My pump's noisy as well, though I wouldn't want it silent....

The wife and I were camping last weekend and I heard the water pump come on, ever so briefly, a couple times and thought "Oh no, got a leak"
Luckily it turned out to be a faucet not fully closed.

I like hearing the pump also. Makes me feel secure knowing it works right when it is on. If I need peace and quiet I do turn the thing off.

I keep mine off until I need it I really don't want to come back to an empty water tank and a wet floor.

I keep mine off until I need to use it. I was lucky I was in my trailer when my toilet decided to spring a leak. It is amazing how much water that pump can move when you don't want it to!
Also I added a accumulation tank to my system. I used steel braided lines from HD. About 25 inches each in length if I remember correctly.
I'll take pictures of the setup.

Sorry these pictures aren't very good, however they do show the braided hose and the accumulator tank.
Note that the hoses "loop". This does two things. One it takes pressure off the threaded fittings and second the loops act as a expansion loop taking water pressure and working as a damper. This helps (IMHO) to quiet the system also.

Here's a pic I found on the net. It shows the looped flex hoses a bit better.
Pump Storage Diagram.JPG
You can also see some of the other components like padding under the pump, the winterizing valve and hose, the accumulator tank, and more. It really gives you a good idea of how to hook up the various components if you want to add something.

Thanks for the photo Steve.
The only thing I haven't done yet is to add a loop before the pump. Adding one after the pump, stiffening the walls, adding a layer of insulation on the stiffening panels and blocking open spaces around the pump enclosure have helped quite a bit. This weekend is our last camping trip of the year and I'm waiting to see what my wife thinks when we run the water.

By design the rv water pump is noisy it's just the way it is. Most pumps have 3 chambers and are driven with a switch plate that actuates each chamber as it rotates so it thumps as each chamber is charged and discharges. Valves open and close things go round and round ever time each chamber charges the pressure goes up and then drops unlike a house pump that has constant pressure. So the best "fix" is to try and reduce the noise with thing like flex hose and dampening arrangements for the pump it's self. An accumulator tank helps also for two reasons it forms a air cushion for the water pressure isolations and reduces run time. I have a 2 gallon accumulator tank the pump runs longer when it runs but stays off for a considerable amount of time instead of start and stop as water is used. Looped flex lines on the suction line and discharge line and the pump is mounted on a “T” shape bracket that sits on a ¾ rubberized foam pad that “floats” it is not fixed to the floor or wall. It is quiet enough when it runs that you have to concentrate to hear it. I’m a tinkerer so I enjoy spending excessive amounts of time to “fix” some thing that bothers me so if you want quiet be prepared to spend a lot of time and some money! My biggest issue was figuring out how to get a 2 gallon tank in a gallon and a half space (turns out it really was a 2 gallon space).

I like that, it describes me (it also me causes a fair amount of second guessing myself, like," is this worth all the time I'm putting into it???").
