Portable 12-volt charger, with intelligent 3-stage charging

I was looking for a charger to take with me when I dry camp/boondock without electricity. I have a cheaper model I picked up at a Sam's Club which at least used a computer to control charge. But I wanted something a bit more sophisticated.

I bought a Xantrex X-power Jumpcharger:

http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/148/p/1/pt/29/product.asp

Although I am not happy with its condition upon arrival from Amazon.com, I do like the value for the money. I paid about $75.

When you connect a semi-dead battery to the unit, it will allow you to pick the initial charge rate. It will then actively step the rate down (through the three types of charging) until its full.

Do you still like the xantrex charger? Has it worked well?

dkasten39828 is an unknown quantity at this point
My neighbor has one of these jumpstart/chargers. He likes it. But he doesn't use it to charge and maintain an RV battery. He uses it to jump start weak batteries and perform the occasional charging.

I prefer one of the marine-grade 3 or 4-stage chargers. They are designed to handle the deep cycle charging we need for our RV batteries.

We have this:

We are thinking about upgrading to a higher amperage 3-stage charger to recharge a bit faster and maybe adding a desulfinator-type charger. But that's more $$ than we have right now.

3-stage chargers

Thank you for the tip on the charger! Looks like a good one. Lots of nice reviews at Cabellas.

I think I will need something with a higher amperage though in order to get charged in the approx. 4 hours the ranger allows at Mount Rainier National Park.

Know of any faster chargers that are not bank breakers? I also saw the higher amp chargers can get rather pricey.
