Passthrough Storage - Slide Out Drawer Mod

We wanted a better way to keep the front pass through storage area more organized and I have seen this kind of thing both as factory option on some (non-sunline) rigs and as an mod. So I decided to make one. I figured it would eliminate a lot of space on the sides of the drawer, and under the drawer. It was a compromise we were willing to make for better organization. As it turns out what I thought would be "lost" areas are quite handy for certain items. On the sides of the drawer I keep my leveling boards, under the drawer I keep my back up jack & slide wrenches.

I used 3/4" pine of the drawer sides, 1/2" plywood for the drawer bottom, 2" casters for the rollers, and 2x4's for the drawer runners. The wheels carry the load and the runners keep it tracking straight and from tipping if extended out too far. I feel comfortable extending just a bit past half way and I can roll it out from either side.

After the first short camping trip, we love it already!

Fantastic! A real nice job. Nice touch with the fixed wheels rather than mounting them on the drawer.

I wish my passthrough was wide enough for something like that. Mine is only about 11 inches wide. .... sigh ....

I just saw this and I think you have a terrific idea there! I was thinking of doing something like this to our 2499 (same space as yours) and I like the idea of the casters mounted to the floor to carry more weight. Speaking of weight, do you have any idea what this set up weighs? A 2499 has a lot of tongue weight to begin with, so I am leery about adding too much to it.
Thanks,
Rich

Not heavy at all. 20-30lbs. Still working great after 2 seasons. I wouldn't change much of anything. Even the hokey latch still works good.

Thanks, looks like you used 6 casters, is that right?

8 casters. That way I can pull it out a little more than half way (depending on the load in it) and still be on 2 sets of wheels.

Lightbulb That's awesome!

That is awesome! Thanks for sharing. Was going to do it with bought units, wow are they expensive. I said no way am I doing it for that price. That's no hokey latch. Simplicity is the ticket! Have a great day!

Well mine is coming along, I made a few modifications (photos when It's done) and I was wondering if you had any way of stopping your slider from extending past where you would want it to stop?
Thanks,
Rich

Scott, your handy work looks great!!!

It also is a much better use of space then the plastic draw setup Sunline offered which I "think" was a Lippert company add on. We had one that came on the T310SR and I let go with the T2499. It worked OK but you lost a lot of room with it. Your custom system is "Perfect".

The T slot, did you saw that out on the bench/radial arm saw or use a Dado? or router.

Here is a pic of the factory ones in my T2499. I mounted all the way to one side to not waste as much space. It was originally in the center of the cargo hole goofing up storage on both sides.

John, how did they prevent tipping when extended on that optional slideout?

The plastic draw was molded as all one piece draw. The lower frame was a separate all one molded piece. It was 8 feet long as wide as the camper. There is a tongue on the side sitting in a groove that prevents the draw from flipping up. You normally would only pull it out 4 feet, meaning 4 feet is left inside. But still it would not flip up as the tongue in groove holds it. If you pulled it 6 feet out you might be pressing your luck. You could pull it completely out if I recall right, just have to pull 8 feet out and out it would come.

Scott cut the groove in the side plate and has the tongue on the draw to create this effect.

OK, I see, I want to do two things different with mine that is taking me more time to do. One, I want to use a roller set up to eliminate wood to wood friction and two, I want stops at the ends so that whether it's pulled out to the right side or the left, it can't slide out all the way. My roller will be in the center of the compartment, so I don't want the slide out drawer to pass that point.
Thanks,
Rich
