Since the wiring for the extra taillights is identical to the trailer wiring, and actually on the same circuit, I would not expect any change in flash rate by swapping out just the trailer's S/T/T 1157's for LED's.

On the other hand, if you swap out the TV's S/T/T incandescents, you may see a change in flash rate and you may not. That will depend on what kind of flasher the vehicle manufacturer uses. If if is an electronic one the rate should not change. If it is a thermal one, then you will see a change. There are resistors you can add to the S/T/T circuit to fix that.

Some newer vehicles have "bulb out" sensing circuitry and they don't like LED's at all. The LED folks have some fixes for that, but as you say, pricey.

Replacing the TT's S/T/T and clearance bulbs with LED's greatly reduces the current draw on the TV's circuitry. I know that the TV's can handle it, but decreasing the load without sacrificing functionality or brightness is always a good thing.

It seems finding a surface mount S/T/T/B light will be a problem. Will keep looking.

The Expedition has just turn over 27,000 miles and I got a letter from the dealership wanting me to bring it in for oil change and transmission flush. Might have to swap to a GM if Ford needs transmission work every 25,000 miles. My simple 'next oil change' turned into a $400 maintenance bill. And I thought camping was costly. Sheesh!!

There are a number of different LED's that will fit in the existing RV style S/T/T fixtures. These would work well:

I have a pair of these mounted just above the regular fixtures on the rear of my trailer:

They would be adequate as primary S/T/T but don't have the license plate light built in so a separate one would have to be added. (If I were going to use these as primary on the trailer in place of the RV fixtures, I would probably use two on each side. That would pretty much cover the entire area where the existing light is.)

Super Bright LEDs ? LED Lights, Bulbs, and Accessories for lots more choices.

Hi Steve, The TT existing fixture has lenses with small cracks in them and look frosty so do need replacing. I've put the link in my favs so will check it out. I do want to install two lights for each function, except for back up and I'll add extra of those but not on the rear. In Florida they like to write tickets for non-werkin lights. With two they might leave me alone with one werking. The effort to go with the LEDs is worth it to me because they get the attention they are meant for and do it much better than the factory bulbs. My priorities are to be seen on the road and then see inside when I'm stopped. LEDs do that the best of what is available now.

I have a question.....it looks like we have 921 bulbs in our overhead single and double lights......what is everyone suggesting for the replacement LED bulb?

I spent hours researching this but I guess "I just don't get it" !

I'm looking for something that all I have to do is replace the bulb........I don't want to have to wire in anything!

Hints and help, ladies and gentlemen!

Kathy

Revolution by Star Lite Inc. makes LED's that plug into the wedge sockets replacing 921's for example. I bought a couple different ones that work well and draw 2 or 3 watts. They push in a little harder but they do fit.

There is a LED side effect. As we settled down to dinner Saturday night at Caroga Lake Camp site and tuned in to A Prarie Home Companion, there was a lot of interferrence on the FM radio by the LED 18" from the radio. No interferrence by the one 3' away. It's a 16 LED 200 lumen. A minor inconvenience, turn on another light further away. Another one with 5 LED's as close didn't interfere.

You can find these at PPL RV Parts and Dyers RV as well as other sites. Shop around, the price varies quite a bit. Also the people at Star Lite are very responsive with questions.

They aren't going to save you money but when you're on battery it's nice to know you're using a third of the power as the other bulbs.

Follow this link, you'll see the Revolution wedge 160 and 194. I bought 2 of each. I wrote Star Lights and asked what to replace a 921 with and they told me the 160. I thought I remembered 200 lumens but the email said they were coming out with a 200 lumen bulb later this year. The 194's I bought at Alpin Haus. They're not as bright as what I replaced but bright enough. I think I found the better price at Dyers though. They do press in hard as one review said but they do work. They're not cheap but I think I might buy the 250 next time if I find a good price. The 194 is a white light and the 160 is more yellow like the ones we replaced.

thanks for the help....I think I have narrowed it down to two LED's on www.Superbrightleds.com

WLED-WWHP-10-DAC $14.95 98 lums in warm light
or
WLED-WHP18-TAC = $19.95 and 135 lums in warm light.

Now my question is - has anyone noticed any difference between the flat disc (item 1) and the cylinder type (item 2)???

Thanks
Kathy

Because they are different outputs, it's difficult to say but I think I like the cylinder better. It seems to reflect more light. I have a hard time relating to lumens. I can relate to wattage. I think I replaced 7 watt bulbs and the 160 lumen bulb isn't as bright but bright enough.

Any advantage to using LED's if you are on shore power majority of the time, is the only advantage when you are boondocking.

The only advantage I see is that they use less power, run cooler and last longer. Because of the cost, other than saving the battery I don't see any real advantage.

Thanks Paul....I ordered two disc type bulb for now, once I get them, we'll check it out and possibly go to the cylinder bulbs....the disadvantage of those is they may not fit in the light fixture, according to the customer service rep at SuperBrightLeds.com

I think Steve has some LED's too so we'll do a comparison in Old Forge in September and we'll all know what works best. See you then.

Hi Kathy

Sorry late to your note. I have the flat ones from Superbright. Look like this. I have a pic somewhere of them installed but can't find it right now

They fit in the fixtures well and are above 100 lumines. We went with warm white on these. Be carefull when installing them, push gentle but firm...

It took me 3 years but the total inside and the 1 outside scare light is converted over. In the flood lights I had to go with the cool white as I coudl not find that type in warm white. Since they are used for reading it is better in some ways.

They make are real difference in boondocking.

John
