Thank you for that picture post. That really helps. The description that the cool white is like a florescent sure holds true. The mellow glow is gone.

Right now I’m thinking for us warm white. Please post you next test. This is great now that you can post pics.

John

Another Test

I received my second set of LED’s today from Deal Extreme.

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5834

As you’ll note below it is extremely well made, 6 bright LEDs mounted in an Aluminum block, the block acts a heat sink. It comes with a stick on surface on the rear and two connectors. There advertisement shows three but I only received two. It cost about $10.

Deal Extreme T10 BA99

I compared it to a similar LED from SuberbrightLEDs.com that cost $22. The Superbrights had 9 LEDs but had no heatsink. The following picture is the superbright

SuperBright

This is the Deal Extreme.

Deal Extreme

This is the two LEDs together.

Both LED’s together

The Deal Extreme is not as bright, but I expect two of them in the fixture would be adequate. Definitely the SuperBright and the Deal Extreme together are up to replacing the traditional bulbs. As for current they draw 1/8th the current.

Another advantage

I've been installing my solar panels. In the process I have unplugged the trailer from the 'shore AC power'.

In the process I've noticed that as the battery voltage decreases the output of the LED lights is relatively constant versus the incandescent lights where the brightness decreases rapidly with dropping voltage.

There is no doubt that in the coming years as LEDs become more efficient and costs drop that LEDs will replace all incandescents in trailers.

Soon to be solar powered,

Norm

I followed the link and it seems many of the reviews stated a concern over the high temp/heat these things quickly put off, even with the heat sink.

Have you noticed anything you might need to worry about like your lense covers being melted or getting really hot?

Look forward to seeing some pics of the solar panel install!

Take care,
Lode

Lode:

I have to replace the cover on one of the lights in my pass through compartment that melted from the heat of a stock incandescent light.

Evidently, something fell against the light and turned the switch on. The lack of air circulation caused the heat to build up and melted the lense.

Incandescent bulbs aren't the coolest things in the world, I think as long as the fixture has good ventilation the heat build up won't be a problem.

LED

Mack,
I have had heat damage to an overhead light cover/lens over the couch in normal use.
Yes, incandescent bulbs get hot, and quartz halogen bulbs really get hot.

Melting

The LED lamps are absolutely cool. I have put my finger on theLEDs after they've run an hour and they seem to be near room temperature after an hour of operation. This test includes both varieties of LEDs I purchased.

Like most people I've had lens burn up from incandescents. Sometimes I think the angel of the bulb mount allows the incandescent to get too close.

As well when the Converter goes into it's de-sulfation mode the voltage and it's wattage also jump up.

Norm has inspired me....

I'm running short on time so I'll just dump some quick pics and report back after this upcoming boondocking trip.

First we went camping 2 weeks ago and I yanked out all the 921 bulbs. Man they suck juice and are hot. One the glass melted. See pic below.

Converted to a combo of 194's and 906's in places we needed more light. There are 24 lights sockets just inside our camper.... just think what that was on 921's at 1.4 amps each...

The 194's at 0.3 amps are a real mellow glow and once the eyes adjust you can see not to bad as long as your not trying to do dishes or shave or read. The 906's at 0.7 amps are bright enough that the 922's then seem too bright. I use the 906's in only select locations.

Cindy went and got one of those book lights Lode pointed us to. She likes it so far.

I also took the plunge into a few LEDs. Did a flub up at the auto parts store and picked up what I thought was a white flood light. Surprise It's red.... oh well back it goes and off to Super Bright LED lights .com https://www.superbrightleds.com/cat/...-bulbs/page/2/

I also found this site to help figure out the watts and bulb numbers. It is amazing how many wedge type base bulds there are with almost the same wattage but different numbers. I went to the auto parts store with a list of different blub numbers trying to tartget the right wattage. It is hard getting 906's or 918's until you bump into the right store

http://www.bulbs.com/T--Type/results.aspx?No=10

So I ordered a few LEDs to try. While I have not camped with them, I am pleased with the light using Norms 100 lumens target and warm white light.

Here are some pics and I'll report back after camping with them. The light output of these is amazing.

You can see the melted 922.

Here is the LED flood, it is cool white as that is all it came in. Boy it is bright. LED on left and standard flood on right of bed

Now just LED. You cannot stand it pointing at you, have to tip away and let it bounce off the wall.

And the standard flood bulb

And the LED

Now to place the LEDs in the overhead light. This thing is blinding without the plastic cover on. It's light output is about equivilent to a 906 standard bulb by my eye. The pics did not come out that well like Norms but like I said the LED is comparable to a 906 bulb but a fraction of the power to run it. If these things where cheaper I would of got more. I have 4 LED's for the entire camper inside and will deal with the 194's and 906s as needed for now.

More in 2 weeks. I only have a few of these LEDs due to the cost but in high use, high light areas.

John

John,

We're going to have to do some nighttime comparisons next week.

I also ordered some bulbs from superbright, UPS says they're on the truck and will be delivered today!

I'll try to get some comparison shots when I get them installed.

Just for giggles, I ordered one of the 36 LED units to try out. I mounted it today, in the fixture right inside the door of the 320. We waited till dark and checked it out. Kitty loves it, to say the least! The color is much different that incandescent, but it's very nice.

Looks like we'll be ordering a lot more of these!

Leds lamps

We are on the road and now using our LED lamps, we now have them in three fixtures. They seem to be as bright as the originals, in addition Ginny says the white output provides more contrast when reading.

I think they also have the advantage of more even output when the batter voltage drops.

We have now had LED lights for the last six months of our traveling. We still have some incandescents however when we upgrade our Sunlight this summer all lamps will be LEDs. Their white light is much better than the yellow of the incandescents for reading.

As a result we are thinking of replacing some of the bulbs with Superbright LEDs, focusing on the most used locations, over the bed and over the kitchen table. Though they are expensive there is no need to replace them all, they last forever, while a well used fixture may require replacement of the lamp three times a year. The LED lamps cost between $12 and $21.

Norm
I ran across a site that has good service and pretty good pricing. They have free shipping on orders over $30.00

This pad they have is very nice!

If that one is too large to fit then they have another on that is smaller and has two differant sockets in the pack.

Click here to see that one.

We've tried two different sources for LED bulbs and they both worked well. Unfortunately unlike incandescants there's no standard. I will say we are happy with both sources and will have LEDs in every socket in our new trailer. Thanks for another source.

Are you folks saying that I can replace the interior bulbs in my 1994 Saturn with the LEDs here. http://www.superbrightleds.com/image...WHP10-D_mm.jpg
I'm confused. Do I need to just plug in the LED in the bayonet mount that is currently in the lamps(921 I think)

BTW, I've also seen this type. Can someone please point me to the best product for replacing the incandescent with LED's? The links that point me directly to the home page of the online sellers is pretty confusing to this novice.

Be careful of ebay and others with cheap prices either they are Chinese (as in sold from China) or import from China and you will wait for them to be shipped from China as the co. doesn't stock the LED's they are resellers. An 1156 bulb does indeed draw 24 watts but it also is rated 400 lumens this can be matched with a lower rating LED because the light is more useful due to the angle of light radiation and no light is lost shining up or to the sides. The best replacement for a camper light is the SMD boards with a pig tail to plug into the socket or the flat stab in’s. The tower ones waste too much light.

Kit,

These LED bulbs at this site are the ones we used to replace our 921s in our 2363:

194 LED Bulb - 10 SMD LED Wedge Base | Boat/RV/Other Miniature Wedge Base Bulbs | Boat/RV/Other LED Replacement Bulbs | Boat, RV, and Other Lighting | Super Bright LEDs

Mind you, we did have to take a file - actually my husband used a dremel - and file down the plastic base a little to make it fit but we just pulled out the 921 bulb and replaced it with this LED. We've been pleased with them. If you are confused, you can call superbrightleds at 866-590-3533; their customer service is quite helpful. They are also very good about returns.
