Installing A/C?
After our trip this weekend, the Minister of Finance has approved the purchase of an A/C unit for the T-1550. I plan on ordering a Coleman Polar Cub 9200btu Low Profile RV Air Conditioner Complete with a Cool Ceiling Assembly (this one: COLEMAN POLAR CUB RV ROOF AIR CONDITIONER - $639.00).
My question is, how do folks get these installed in roofs you're not supposed to walk on? Our trailer is wired for A/C, just need to remove the vent and install the unit, then install the wire to the 20 amp side of my 30/20 mini-breaker and go camping with A/C.
Any suggestions as to how to man handle this 90# unit onto my roof and then into the vent opening? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Frank

Plywood, lay across it to disperse your weight.

lay a blanket or piece of carpet on the roof before you put the plywood on it......

I'm assuming that with wiring already in the ceiling that my roof has sufficient support for a 90# air conditioner?
I worry about the strangest things...

I set the A/C on the roof or a motorhome, a tallllll motorhome, by myself. I placed a ladder against the roof and used the ladder to slide the heavy unit up and caught it with a piece of plywood and cardboard on top. Once up, it was simple to finish.
Yes, it should support the weight once in place. Just have support/plywood to werk on while up there so 'you' don't fall thru or separate the seams.

Gee Jim, maybe 10 years ago I coulda done that push-it-up-a-ladder thing, but I don't know now. Gonna have to get one of my boys to do that. I don't think it will be difficult either seeing it is made to go in the vent hole, and the wiring is there. Only thing is, then I won't have a main cabin vent. Hmmm.
Thanks!

Frank,
I forget, do you have a pick up truck? I thought you did.
When you get your helper son, get the carpet (mat etc) plywood, and ladder all setup. On the opposite side of the camper back the truck along side the camper. Put the AC roof unit in the truck bed. Both of you get in the truck bed. That may get you 3 feet off the ground to start with. Then the 2 of you lift it up onto the roof. Then go around to the ladder and finish up the rest.
In this case, may want to put the stabilizer jacks down before going up on your little camper roof.
While we did not use the pickup truck method, we had a "hill" to raise the land... No shortage of hills at this camp ground....
2 well fed adults can get the AC unit off the roof. The process can be reversed and your camper is lower to the ground to start with. And this is a 15,000 btu unit.
Yes, we are even smiling as we work...
Hope this helps and good luck
John

Boy, that is a great idea John, thanks! And yes, I do have a pickup. You can see a few pics of it in our album: http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/me...albums264.html
AC should be here Tuesday. I should have both older boys around next Wednesday. Hopefully the weather will cooperate, I will be over this rotten tooth infection/dry socket thing, and we can at least get the new unit up on top and in the hole. After today's weather, I can't wait!

Is there any easy way to make sure the roof will support my new A/C unit? Once I remove the vent is there a way to check support stuff from inside?
I just worry that our nearly 30 year old trailer's roof has deteriorated, but I can't see it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Frank

Actually there is something that you can check from the inside. Maybe, if yours is built like mine.
Take off the shroud
Now look at the boxed frame
Mine is boxed out with 2 x 4's . Is the wood good and solid?
The hole up top will look like this
While mine is a rubber roof and yours metal, if you are concerned about the wood deteriorating, well it will not matter AC unit or not. If you find bad wood it need to be fixed first along with the leak that made the wood go bad.
Maybe try checking from the inside out first before tearing the roof hatch off. If it is solid inside you stand a fighting chance.
Good luck and hope this helps
John

That is a big help John. I'll pull the shroud tonight and see what I have. Thank you.

Go to Home Depot and rent a drywall lift. They rent for about $40.00 a day! You put your plywood on there, set the a/c unit on top, hoist it up and you're good to go! They even come with wheel locks on them so the unit won't roll away from you while you're working up there!
