Electric Jack Instalation with Pics

Well the weather has me eager to camp and I could not wait any longer to get the Sunny out. I decided the best time to try and pull it out of its storage spot was early one morning while the ground was still frozen. Its still to cold to de-winterize the water lines but I wanted to put the new jack on and start checking things over for the upcoming season. If all goes well and the weather cooperates we are headed to Fish Creek the 3rd week of April for a few days.
I pulled the TT out with no problems and backed it into my garage.

I chocked the tires and placed blocks under the hitch and a jack stand for extra safety.

I removed the 3 existing bolt holding on the jack.

After removing the old jack I cleaned the rust and old paint from the frame so the new jack would sit firmly on the frame.

New jack ready to install

The jack tube fit perfectly through the upper hole but was too large to fit through the lower hole.

I used my air drill with a reamer to enlarge the hole

After enlarging the hole the jack fit perfectly, I installed the provided bolts using the provided star washers. The star washers provide the ground for the jack. I also added wire loom to protect the wire.

I tie wrapped the wires to the jack tube and ran them up to the battery.

I installed crimp connectors for the circuit breaker, I used heat shrink connectors and put anti corrosion grease on the wires before crimping.

The jack called for a 40amp breaker that I picked up at local Auto parts

Completed project, Lets Camp!!

My propane tank cover is a little harder to get on as the jack motor sticks out the back. I figure for the few times I take it on and off it wont be a problem.

Ben......

I really appreciate your posting. I've just taken delivery of a remanufactured jack, and have been planning to install it in mid-April after we return from a FL jaunt.

Your great photos and narrative removed my excessive caution re: the task.

THANKS!

Frank

Looking good. You're going to love pushing a button vs. the 'crank crank crank'.

Take care,
Lode

Great pictures and installation description. I cheated, and skipped a few steps I left the trailer hooked to the truck, removed the old jack and installed the power jack (that jack has been on SO many previous Sunlines), and then all I had to do was unhitch the trailer. No extra jacking/blocking required.

It's great not having to CRANK anymore

Good job. Also see you used the circuit breaker verses the fuse. Good choice. I converted my Attwood to a circuit breaker when I installed it. They used a fuse which does protect it, but then you have to fiddle with find one at the worst time. However I have yet to ever have it trip.

I put mine under the jack hood. Where did you out yours?

John

JohnB,
I usually use circuit breakers on anything I wire except electronics. I guess this comes from my years of working on Emergency vehicles. Warning Lights, electric motors and equipment that require high amps are wired on circuit breakers so they will reset if overloaded. Radios and sensitive electronics are put on fuses. I’m not an electrical engineer but it is my experience that a fuse will trip faster thus sometimes protecting an item like a radio from damage. An electric motor under heavy load may temporarily overload the circuit and trip the breaker. The nice thing about breakers is let them cool and they will reset. As you said this eliminates having to search for fuses at inopportune times. I wire tied my breaker to the handle on my battery for now. I don’t like the big glob of wires and fuses next to my battery. I hope to get time this summer to put a plastic weather proof box on the frame and get the wires and TT main fuses better organized in out of the weather. When I do this I will mount the jack circuit breaker in this box.

My apologies if I missed it in the post, but from where does the jack get power? In other words, what is the power connection connected to?

Thanks,
David

I should have taken 1 more pic showing the battery connection. The power wire hooks directly to the positive terminal on the TT battery. Just make sure it has either a fuse or circuit breaker in the wire somewhere.

Thanks. I could not imagine where else it would go, but wanted to be sure. I will have a jack one of these days. It just has not made it's way to the top of my wish list.

Thanks again!

Later,
David

Power jacks sort of go like this progression:

1. The wish list

2. The want list

3. The never do without again list....LOL

Once you are assimilated into the push button crowd you will never go back to the crank

Great thread and thank you for the effort! I have decided I am buying an electric jack this week. I have a bad old injury and jacking my 195S ruins the first day of camping and the day after from neck/shoulder pain.

I'm using my Sunline finally almost every other weekend and loving it. A jack wasn't the highest thing on my priority list but its there now. Next is the truck to pull it better.

So a who makes the most reliable electric jack with a hand crank option should it go down and who's got the best prices on them?

Thanks,

BIlly

I did a lot of research before I bought mine, the main manufactures are Atwood, Barker, Ultrafab and Bulldog. If you search on the TT forums you will find numerous threads on which is the best jack. I have only had mine a few months and have not had any problems with it, maybe some of the more experienced campers here can tell you about any problems they have had with their jacks. I think they all come with a back up in case of failure, some have the hand crank included and some don't. I have to carry a 3/4 socket and extension in my tool kit for my jack. As for price shop around and look on E-Bay. I bought mine from Mantelli trailer sales on E-Bay. I liked the Bulldog as it has a 5 year warranty. You will find most people will keep their jack and move it from TT to TT as they upgrade.

Good luck and happy camping.

A cheap plug for customer service. Recently bought a used 2653 camper that had the electric jack, it was a super jack made by Barker.

Shortly after getting it home the powerhead was creaky and I noticed the post was slightly bent so it only went up half way.

I called Barker MFG and talked to the sweetest customer service rep. She walked me through a trouble shoot and sent me my parts.

Parts arrived and after install the powerhead was still not working and we had a series of ongoing phonecalls. After troubleshooting did not work they sent me a refurbished powerhead, no charge.

WOW wish all companies stood behind their product like that! Great job Barker mfg
