Axle Lift and Apologies

I know I've answered a few posts about my lift kit and I think I need to apologise.

I dont have leaf springs so I guess I dont have an Axle-Flip like I might have stated in past forums. I was under the Sunline for the past few days sanding the frame (I'm in the process of painting it) and while crawling under the axles a few different times, I stopped and thought, they're no Leafs under here?

So I apologize if I answered any past topics incorrectly as we opted for the independent suspension and that canceled out the leaf springs. This is the way our axles are set up and why when I mentioned that they added a lift by simply adding a peice of square pipe, it seemed so simple.

Hope that clears things up.

That is the way it looks and maybe why I'm always so confused when so many others talk of axle flips and shocks and what not?! I was wanting to install a set of shocks on the axles, and now I'm confused as to how I might do that being as I have no leafs to mount them to?

Pat

Thanks for posting the pics. Always interesting.

Did the axle setup with 2 x 2 x 1/4" structural tubing come direct from Sunline? It looks like it almost had to as the axle mounting tab would not line up the I beam frame.

Here is what the T2499 looks like without the torque flex rubber ride. This is also on the 5” channel iron frame. In 2005 they switched to 6” I beam.

Thanks

John

Yep, it came straight from Sunline like that. I believe it was called the Soft Ride option? Both axles can move independently of one another and it tends to ride very smooth.

But it makes me wonder how to install a Shock kit for the small bumps?

Pat,

Your sig says you have a 4" lift. I'm only seeing 1" square tubing welded onto the frame rail, so it looks like all you're gaining is an inch. How are you getting the extra three inches? It was my understanding that the TorFlex axles didn't change the ride height. Actually, now that I look back at the pics, is that 1" or 2" tubing?

We've got those TorFlex's on our boat and they work very smooth. They don't make much noise. My only complaint is on steep inclines (such as boat launch ramps), all the weight of the boat goes on the front tires and the back goes up in the air. Our friends have an identical boat on a different trailer with leaf springs and all their tires touch all the time. I can see how this axle system could be very successful on a travel trailer or fifth wheel, but not a boat.

I have no Idea how it made the lift equal 4"?? I guess we'll have to compare my height to other stock 2499's at the meet and greet. I know I've seen a bunch of other stock 2499's and none of them are as tall as mine??

Like I said, I talked with Carl and said I wanted it lifted, and this was what I got...LOL I guess I should pay more attention to the details. All I know is I like the way it rides compared to any other trailer I've pulled, but they've all had leaf springs. This is the only Camper I've ever owned.

Bring a Tape Measure to the meet and greet

Well, if it bothers you in the meantime, General has a new '07 2499 in Grand Rapids and a used '06 2499 in Birch Run .

I'm wondering if they flipped the axles?? If you look at those pictures I posted, they would work with those mounts on the bottom of the axle, but would be pretty low.

Jon, you have to remember, I dont have a job that pays me anything, and the hardest thing I've done in the past 6 months was ride 14 miles with my 9 year old nephew on our mountain bikes a few days ago. NOTHING bothers me

I'm supposed to meet up with Wayne over at General RV to talk about adding a few electrical things I'm not comfortable working on, so I'll try and snap a few pictures of one of the stock models and see what the measurement differences are.

Unfortunately, Wixom doesn't have any Sunline's there at all, new or used! They took both remaining new units to Wayland (Grand Rapids) and both used units are in Birch Run. It was killing me to pass Birch Run today and pass up the opportunity to look at them. Hopefully I'll be looking (seriously) at one in Brighton soon though.

Wow, 14 miles is quite a ride. Was that over at Island Lake? I rode about 1.5 miles last night up north with a long break talking to somebody part way through and I thought that was a lot. I guess I was riding too fast because none of the Newell owners were outside being social!

Yeah, we've been home for a few weeks now, and in between modifications to the Sunline, I've been introducing my nephew to the fabolus trails this area has to offer.

Cindy and I rode both loops over at Island Lake a few days ago, and were both whipped. We pulled back up to the truck and Mr. Testosterone says "Want to go again?" Boy what it'd be to be 9 years old again.

We've ridden Maybury State Park, Island Lake, and the new Milford trail all in the past few days.

I'm just across Beck from Maybury! It's a beautiful park, but be careful on some of the mountain bike trails. A leader in my BS troop was just severely injured on one of those trails a couple weeks ago. He almost didn't make it, then was going to be paralized from the neck down, but is now regaining some feeling back as far down as his toes! He's recovering at U of M right now. He's lucky to be alive, mainly because another biker was behind him a little ways and discovered him very quickly. He was airlifted to U of M from Maybury. They think he probably hit a tree root and that caused him to go over. The helmet saved him though. If he didn't have that on, he would either be dead or have severe brain damage. I've not biked the trails there, but the paved roads are very scenic and in spots are almost as rough as a trail with the tree roots popping up through the pavement.
