Added cabinet w/TV and organizer

Here's pics of my first mods/additions.

I'm going to change out the way the TV is mounted...I dont think it's secure enough to stand up to all the bouncing around durning towing, so I am going to hard mount directly to the door. I have pics of how I built if anyone is interseted in seeing how I actually constructed either or both mods.

Joe

Nice looking woodwork there. Thanks for sharing.

Your flat screen door looks similar to a concept I was thinking of for our Sunline entertainment cabinet. Did you make the door frame or buy one and convert it?

My problem is getting the maple. I actually have some clear maple ¾ planed board up in the shed left over from when I made my sons crib. He is now 25…. Sparks flew from the saw then trying to cut it and it was still green. I’m afraid now it is so hard I may not be able to work it.

So I’m on the hunt for some planed ¾” clear maple at a semi reasonable price that is ideally less then 1 year old from cutting. Use to have a buddy who ran a saw mill and could get fresh cut hard wood cheap. Or to buy a custom frame and I add the backing out of some maple venire board I have left. Tweety and Kitty had some custom frames made up that where not that bad in cost.

Thanks

John

Mr Tweety
Joe,

This is a very nice mod. I am interested in this mod as I have lots of seemingly "hollow" walls. Mrs Tweety is interested in perhaps a robe or coat rack in the bedroom that recesses into the wall.

Question:
Can you supply a bit of detail as to how the "box" is attached to the Sunline wall studs ?? Also what the outer molding actually attaches to ??

I would very much appreciate it.

Steve

Great work, Joe

You gained some very valuable storage space. I especially like the shallow shelves right inside the door.

With the great minds we have in this group, there will ALWAYS be someone thinking up a modification to do. Keep posting anything that you do to your Sunline, we like to look at pictures.

I need to get back to my entertainment center mod and get it totally finished. A 9 day trip to Williamsburg, VA 2 weeks ago, and this past weekend a gun shoot has kept me from working out in Sunny. And this coming saturday I have a greyhound event to attend. Hey maybe sunday I can work on Sunny :P

Update.....new and much improved method to mount TV to door, rock solid now. Made from left over 3/4" maple, painted black and mounted with 4 bolts which is tons more stable. Best of all it only cost about $3.00 for the bolts, so now I can return the cheap wall mount I purchased. Added a locking latch as well.

John....Thank you,

I built the cabinet and door myself. The carcus and door panel is 3/4" Birch, the door frame is 1 x 3 Maple. The 3/4" Birch was used as the panel for structural reasons to support the TV. I used a 2 part (toner/stain) from American Woodmark Corp, Honey Maple I had left over from from a kitchen remodel I did and wow is it a close match! The Maple I purchased from Lowes beleave it or not, right off the floor. had to pick through to find pieces with the right graining, but all in all not to bad of a match. They had a good selction of dimentional maple but no maple ply to speak of, but the birch worked fine, very simular graining. You have 25 years old maple...OMG!!!...I bet its georgous! These were actually a very fun, pratical couple of projects.

Kanyonkitty....

Thank you, I actually copied the idea to mount the TV to a door from one of your posts!

Mr. Tweety...

First and formost, as I recall you have the dog named Pepper? Lola is looking very forwad to meeting Pepper at the M&G. Lola supervised the whole project so it's only fitting the first pic be of Lola.

I built the whole thing with simple box construction, added the shelf and rails, reused the panel from the wall cut. The face frame is attached to the box, not the wall so I can remove if I need access to wall cavity. This part of the wall backs up the shower and also acts as what I call the utility chimney, just like a house. I did not attach to any studs. There was some structure there that supported the grab handle but most it was removed to make way for the organizer. I used some 2x2's, liquid nails and screwed to the paneling. The organizer once complete and all the adhesive was set up was placed into the hole and screwed from the sides of the organizer into the 2x2's. See pics, they will probabely make more sense than my rambeling. PM me if you want more info.

Fine looking work Joe, very impressive carpentry. I love the TV is 'swingable' with the cabinet door for multiple viewing angles. Thanks for sharing the pictures and 'how to discussion' with us.

Take care,
Lode
