2499 tv shelf/relocation

Just thought I pass on a small project my DW had me do to see what you all think. Our 2499 had a small tv shelf in the bedroom, which we thought was in the way and not needed. She saw a folding shelf in the sunline brochure at the end of the kitchen counter on some model and ask if I put that shelf in the same spot? I said yes and did just that with some back support installed. It turned out to be just what she wanted. Now she put a mural over the spot where the tv tray was and it looks great. Who watches tv in bed anyway. thanks for listening, dave

I watch TV in bed every night. How bad were the holes you had to cover? I am considering removing the shelf also.

Ditto here!

But DH won't move it because of the holes! How bad where they?

Our '99 T-2453 is the exact reverse of your T-2499's floor plan. Our bedroom is in the back, and the front door enters into the living/dining/galley area.

Our TV shelf was a flip-up on the wall in the bedroom and I removed it, and mounted on the end of the counter by the stove. I first pulled out the stove (4 screws and a propane gas line connection), and added some support boards in the end wall. A couple of coats of poly on the shelf made it reasonably waterproof for kitchen use. If that wears off or deteriorates, I will probably find a scrap of laminate that coordinates with the rest of the trailer and put that down on the top of the shelf.

Right now, I also have the holes in the wall where the TV shelf was located. I am contemplating putting some small flat head screws in the holes and then dabbing a bit of white paint on them to make them less obvious.

After that, perhaps we'll find a picture, poster, or small mural to put on that wall.

My recommendation is make the move, and then use your ingenuity to find something nice to hide the screw holes....

The screw holes were small, she used a razor blade to make the surface flat and then bought a mural of a window looking out onto a canoe with a guy fishing on a lake, very nice and you can not see where the holes had been. I'm kind of big and the change was a good one. I hit stuff all the time if it sticks out from the walls. If I can do it I will post a picture.

H’mm moving the Bed room TV shelf.
For us we are not Bed room TV watchers. Some are and some not. In our case DW is the book worm. Like clockwork, every night the book comes out…. I just roll over and go to sleep.

We use to use the shelf for a winter time electric heater as the plug was right there. However it roasted us out to much not matter where we turned it down to or then froze if too low.

And on the T2499 a flip up counter would be helpful.

For those who have never seen this setup, I have pics of the way it is now. Not moved. As another friendly forum member who does watch TV in bed want to add one here. Hopefully some of you who have moved can post a moved pic.

Here is the shelf

Here is the kitchen area where we are talking moving it to. Just left of the stove. The pillow on the end of the couch would have to move

For the screw holes, the first thing that comes to mind is like what Steve said. Roll the screw holes flat where it slightly puffs out, then put a nice white screw in. This at least makes it not so obvious until we can get a better filler method. Mine has 8 screws to deal with.

Hope this helps and thanks for the idea.

John

Can one of you that mounted the shelf at the end of the couch/stove post some detailed pictures? We're trying to figure out how to do it, but I think the couch will be in the way??

I'd love to see how it was done!!

We just hung a clock where the screw holes were to cover them up. Waiting till we get that right shot and then a nice picture will go there to cover them.

Has anyone done anything to cover the screw holes? We've had the 2753 home less than 4 hours and Steve removed the TV shelf already.

This is not a perfect solution but one I use that helps.

The screw generally leaves a mushroom effect on the wall paper. A little wood and wall paper all bunched up on the outside of the hole in a circle.

I slowly work that mushroom flat. Sort of roll it back down flat. It makes the hole smaller. Then pending the exact location if I see it all the time or not, fill it with off white caulk filler helps. Sunline used this same off white filler up on the ceiling stables or other wall board areas. Look close enough you will see it where a glued panel needed a little extra help.

See here on the ceiling.

The other method is to screw in a white screw and cover it up. Or a nice place for that new picture and cover the whole area up.

I’m hoping someone else will present a better method as I need to use this soon on the new camper.

We put some coat hooks in that covered the top holes. They protrude much less than the folded down TV shelf, and a robe or jacket isn't dangerous to bump into at night Then we took your advice and used the caulk method. Our walls are an almond colored base, and Steve had some almond caulk in the garage. It doesn't look bad. Not perfect...but pretty good...and most of the time there'll be something on the hooks covering the area anyway.

Forgive me for digging up this old bone, but this thread ended without a single photo showing one of the relocated flippy shelves in a new position...all the discussion went to cosmetic issues regarding the screw holes which remained...and the real meat of the thread was putting that beautiful folding shelf somewhere else for greater utility...soooooo...I need to ignite further discussion...PICTURES PLEASE...of that handy shelf in it's new spot...now I'm also willing to be scolded for missing this subject if it has been discussed elsewhere...but as yet I've not seen evidence of same.

Ok I get the hint...nobody want to do see this thread to completion I guess...this seems to happen to some threads in most forums...a great topic will lose traction and leave off with issues people wanted to know about....and somehow it seems to just die without resolving anything...Oh well everyone else must be out camping.

Hi Bob,
I thought that another thread picked up on the shelf relocation idea and that thread showed the stove removed and the wood bracing put in place to support the shelf. I don't have the slightest idea of when and where that thread is though.

Hi Rick....thanks for the reply...better than no replies which is all I have so far....I haven't seen any sort of followup to the original thread anywhere...searching doesn't yield anything useful...most times thats the case unfortunately. I guess it's not all that important and maybe I will just leave it alone afterall. Not such a do or die issue.

Hi Bob,

I remember seeing the shelf mounted at the end of the kitchen counter in someone's camper but can't find the post.

I did find posts for two other locations.

jsms264 mounted it on the end of the overhead cabinet in the kitchen of his 264SR. http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f6...ted-10455.html

Janalee mounted it on the wall of a 2653. http://www.sunlineclub.com/forums/f6...nter-9671.html

When I bought my T2499, the original owner had already removed the TV shelf. He ordered a full size queen bed instead of a RV queen so there is little room to go around the bed particularly with that shelf on the wall.

I have the shelf and I probably should try to mount it on the side of the oven to get more counter space. That would probably be the best use for it.

Thanks Clueless...that was a very helpful post...seeing what jsms264 has done makes it more interesting since his visual presentation shows exactly the potential for that otherwise useless shelf in my bedroom.

He also did a bunch of other changes some of which peaked my interest.

I'm happy now, but more photos will help feed the quest...anyone else?

TV Shelf Photo

As you can see I turned the TV shelf around. It is a natural fit in this spot in a 2499. It does block the doorway somewhat, but I can just sneak by and lots of people are way smaller than me. Careful positioning will put the two left hand screws into part of the cabinet frame. All the other holes are in empty space. I used lock nuts and bolts and fender washers and it has held up over 30,000 mi. You could also push a backing block against the inside of the panel so screws have some real wood to chew into.

I filled the holes with DEX although various other compounds would work. DEX blends nicely--use a very small screwdriver to fill the holes and there isn't even any cleanup. In some light the holes are obvious, but in most light you'll never see them without searching--they are in the photo above.

I also put a dab of silicone on each finger latch to keep it from marking up the cabinet panel as the shelf bounces along the road. I used a door/drawer bumper tab first, but it didn't last. The silicone has held up long term.

Henry
