Vacation Reading

When traveling, Anne and I typically will read books which take place in the area we're visiting: say, Tony Hillerman when we go to the Southwest, or Steve Hamilton's, Alex McKnight series when we tour the UP. Also, we'll try to find books by local writers who may not be published nationally (Nancy Barr's Page One series from Escanaba, Michigan for example). The quality of the writing tends to vary widely (self-publishing isn't necessarily a good thing), but mostly it's fun reading and it gets you into the spirit of the place you're visiting. Also, it's a good way to meet interesting folks: people who manage to survive operating small, local bookstores are a quirky breed (a good example of this is Granpa's Barn bookstore in Copper Harbor, Michigan).

What do others read while on the road?
Don

My husband and kids are really into finding the local ghost books, Charles Adams has written a ton in our area so they are usually the first choice, but we have several others too.

We spend a lot of time in the SouthWest and my wife likes J.A. Jance, who usually write SW mysteries, she has two SW series, one out of Sodona and one out of Bisbee. She also has a Seattle series.

This is a great thing to do. In the Northwest, I read about Pioneers, Lewis and Clark, Custer, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse and the great American Bison. In Cass Lake, MN, I found The Man Who Lived In 3 Centuries. It's a book about, Kahbe nagwi wens, an Ojibwe who reportedly was born in 1790 and died in 1922; a fascinating local story. We hope to make it to New England and the Maritimes one of these days and a re-read of Moby Dick will probably be in order along with Run Silent, Run Deep and Blind Man's Bluff.

I read a lot of Stephen King. His writing style amazes me. I also like to revisit the old classics every once in a while. Twain, Dickens, etc...
