using Good Sam Club DVD campground directory Navigator

Does anyone have any experience using this DVD for navigation and info while on the road? We have joined the Good Sam Club and they offer a free trial of this DVD. They mention that you can download info from this to your GPS? Since we are thinking of obtaining one, GPS, we'd like some experience, if any, on this or a similar DVD.

Thx. Don K.

TrailerLife DVD

Hi Don,
Good Sam and Trailer Life are owned by the same company and sell to the same market. We've used the paper TLDirectory for years and my brother has used the cd/dvd for years as well. The dvd is not Mac compatible. Basically they are the same, but the digital is faster with searching options. The paper TLD has colored state/province maps at the front with towns with camping marked. This helps you geographically locate a campground. Then you flip to the state section and page through an alphabetical listing of towns to find the town from the first map. It gets a little tedious especially in large states with lots of camping where you have several towns to choose from. The dvd lets you click on a map and you can quickly click through your choices. I don't remember the details, but believe the content of the paper and dvd are the same. TLD in either form comes into its own for planning a cross country trip to new territory. If you're going to take a trip around SP in your home state, your state website will provide all the info you need. Other alternatives for cross country travel are Good Sam's website travel tools and KOA's website. We have found state/provincial parks to be a very consistent quality form one jurisdiction to another and will use those websites for info, but they are in TLD too.

I'm not familiar with transferring TLD data to a GPS, but expect it would be no more difficult than logging onto Garmin's website and updating the maps or downloading a new vehicle. If you're familiar with adding and removing USB devices like cameras, memory cards, mp3 players and external hard drives... the GPS is just one more of those devices and is manipulated in the same way. If any of this makes you uneasy, you can certainly use a GPS to plan trip without using the TL dvd. Start low tech with the paper TLD and add each night's stop into your GPS. This can all be done at home as you research a trip. Any side trips can be programmed in as a separate trip or via point. It is possible to route an entire trip into a GPS, but I prefer to break it down into separate days, ymmv.

Henry
