Toyota Sunline for Sale!! ATTENTION JON!!

Found this on another forum I belong to. I'd love to see it in person. These are pretty rare and I guess the guy has put a ton of upgrades into it

1981 4x4 Toyota Sunline RV

No affiliation or relationship, just thought I'd share it with some fellow Sunline Fans and I knew Jon would get a kick out of it

Thanks Pat! I hadn't seen that one before, and for that matter, I've never seen a 4x4 conversion on one of these before... But like the Quigley 4x4 conversion for the Econoline vans, I'm sure it makes it a sweet vehicle now, other than the chassis itself of course...

Looks interesting. Latham is about 10 miles from me. I might take a look this weekend.

Sounds a little unreal. If the person lives in California and picked it up and worked on it, why is it still in the Albany area? I too live nearby and should check it out just because I'm curious.

Paul, if you do, could you try to find a three to six digit Sunline serial #? I've never seen a Solaris motorhome in person to look for this before. I'm not sure they even have one, but it may just be under the door threshold. Even if you don't record it, I'd just like to know if it exists.

Thanks,
Jon

Jon, I forgot about your collection of VIN #'s. We have a couple staying with us right now that has a 2007 2499 and they're not members on the forum....I'll go snap a photo of the VIN # for you and email it to you.

We have them in one slot and Ron & Alice in the slot beside them. Cindy said we should park our camper beside Ron & Alice and have 3 Sunlines in our 4 slots

Thanks Paul, I've got it. I got into it with Michael the other day because I told him that he really should check his figures before he claims a 286SR is half-ton towable. I kept trying to explain that it was mainly the tongue weight, not the entire weight of the trailer, that would push a half ton, such as an F-150, over the weight limit when loaded. He didn't like me...

I was questioning that myself as our 276SR pushes our F150 to the limit. I'm in the process of adding air bags to it as the springs are sagging a wee bit. I also need to adjust the hitch again. I avoid going by my Ford dealer. I'm afraid I might stop to check out the F250s.

Last summer we drove the Million Dollar Highway from Durango to Ouray Colorado. There were several passes that I wondered if the F150 had the guts to get over the top. We made it.

Definitely not good that he would knowingly sell someone a trailer that exceeds the capability of their TV. That could be dangerous.

Here's the exact conversation, because I know a lot of you will enjoy it. It's the wonderful industry at its prime!

Dear chesacorvworld,

As an owner of a 286SR, I think you might want to check your information when you state half-ton towable. I don't know of any half ton that has a hitch strong enough to hold up the 1200# loaded tongue weight of this trailer. I have 1200# bars with Reese HP Dual Cams and I'm occasionally overloading that. When scaled, mine, which has the same few options as this one, came in at 1175# dry (empty water heater) tongue weight but loaded with some gear.

- sunlinefan

Dear sunlinefan,

Good afternoon:
Half ton trucks 2009 thru 2011 can now tow up to 11000LBS. They have made alot of changes to half ton trucks just to keep up with the Toyota and Nissan. But you are right older trucks had a max tow rate of 7700 if it were a 2X2 short bed V8.
Thank You
Michael

- chesacorvworld

Dear chesacorvworld,

Correct, the newer trucks are more capable, but they can tow up to 11k in total weight. The 286SR with a GVWR of 8600 will be well within that. But I'm talking about tongue weight. The new body style F-150 can supposedly tow up to 11,300, but they still have a weight rating on the actual trailer hitch of 10,500# total weight and 1,050# of tongue weight. The 286SR has a dry tongue weight of 910#, so simply adding propane to the tanks and a battery will or almost will push it over the limit without adding anything inside.

- sunlinefan

Dear sunlinefan,

Great:
Based on the numbers you have given me you shouldn't be towing that trailer. Can I intrest you in a mortorhome?
Michael

- chesacorvworld

Dear chesacorvworld,

Except I don't have an F-150, that's just what the hitch for one says, plus the numbers from the 2011 Ford Towing Guide. I have a 3/4 ton truck with a V10 that pulls it just fine. A little sluggish on the hills, but still within weight specs.

- sunlinefan

Dear sunlinefan,

Thank you for the info.

- chesacorvworld

As a number of us have found out over and over again, this is the norm rather than the exception. RV sales folk are earning themselves a very poor reputation.

I personally think it is the sales people themselves and not the dealership. If the owner of the dealership knew what his sales staff was telling potential customers, I believe they would make some changes.

But the pressure to make sales and in turn commissions is too great.

How many new folks have we met right here on SOC who got sold a bill of goods by a salesman and now have a TT that is too heavy for their TV?

I had a sales guy tell me that my duallie (rated to tow 12,400# max) would pull a 16,000# GVWR fiver. I explained to him in no uncertain terms that he was not taking into account "stuff" (clothing, propane, water, food, etc.) and a bit of a safety margin. He tried to say that no one carries 1,500# or more of stuff. At that point, I just started listing how much things weigh. He was not happy.

There were several other couples in the trailer at the time as this was in the middle of a large RV show. Their eyes were wide open. I finally told him that he was making unsafe recommendations and left.

Camping forums have been one of the best things to help fellow campers learn and educate other RV'ers on just about anything to do with a camper. From towing to how to do the dump station and best of all, those really neat camping places! oh and camper mods!!!

And make new friends.

Before the age of the internet just think how many folks just never knew unless they learned it the hard way and word of mouth in a CG.

Remember when a Telex use to be the high end techy piece of office equipment?? I can still see the secretary typing it in and then running the ticker tape back through to send it.

Now just think of "not" have a home PC and the internet being down....

The 286SR has been relisted. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RL%3AUS%3A1123 Seller claims "excellent" interior condition. From looking at the photos at the bottom of the page (down 6, both left and right), there appears to have been some major leakage from the stains on the tile and carpet in front of sofa, dinette and entry door. I wonder what the white carpet runner is hiding? Also some stains on ceiling. Of course, this is the same guy who had a conversation with SunlineFan about towing with a 1/2 ton.

Dona

The slide is open. Meaning not closed all the way. If you look at the one pic of the slide side the bottom is open. They never brought it in the last ~ 1" or it is out of adjustment. That's not a good thing to have left that way. Snow, rain and most anything else has an opportunity to get it.

That is a beautiful camper too. I would for sure check that slide area for water entry.

John

I think it as in 2005 we saw a and fell in love with a T2363 at a dealership in Troy, NY. I had a 6 cyl Nissan PU with a cap of 5500# max. He said it was the perfect tow vehicle for the 2363. I didn' believe him and a year later bought the T1950. The Nissan struggled with it and after a year I bought an F150. I love the 1950 but probably would have bought the 2363 if I had the Ford at the time.
