Took a trip to Morgantown WV today (Without Sunny though)
Kitty applied for social security disability and despite the horror stories we had heard, she was approved in three weeks. I filed out the paperwork and sent it in for her. Finding the appropriate application form was fairly easy and her condition speaks for itself. Social security obtained all the necessary records themselves and made their determination on them alone.
At the same time (July, 2012) We applied for her West Virginia state disability retirement. A couple of weeks ago (September, 2012) we got a packet from them. They had scheduled her for an examination at West Virginia University hospital. They also told her that she was responsible for getting all her records to them, one week prior to the examination. They did not trust her doctor and wanted a second opinion, from one of "Their" doctors. It turns out, that "Their" doctor is a WVU doctor. Kitty's doctor, as coincidence would have it, is also a WVU doctor! Hmmmmm...
When Kitty talked to the people that had set up the exam for the state, she let them know that she was unable to drive 140 miles, wait an unknown amount of time for the appointment to be done and be able to drive herself another 140 miles home. She did not get much of a response from them.
Fast forward to today... I took an unpaid day-off, to be able to take her to the appointment. When we got there, we were told that the people that set up the exam, had cancelled it! We asked for directions to the doctor's office and went to talk to someone there. The receptionist was surprised to see us and could not figure out why the appointment had been cancelled. She went and talked to the doctor and the doctor made time for Kitty.
When the doctor came in the room, she apologized for the mix up (Even though she had nothing to do with it.) She then told Kitty that she had read some of the doctor's latest notes and also could not understand why Kitty was forced to make the trip. She was very nice and assured us that she saw no reason for WV to deny the disability claim. She said that her recommendation would be for them to approve.
Kitty was very worried about this appointment and lost a lot of sleep over it. I can now safely say that she has no other hoops to jump through! The only hurdle left for her to overcome, is the cancer itself.
Her strength is slowly returning, after all the antibiotics they pumped into her last week. I know they were necessary, but they really cause her cancer to flare up. She has more pain in her liver now and we were told that it is because the cancer is growing and stretching her liver. Before the infection/antibiotics, her liver pain was slowly going away.
