Taos, NM

Over the weekend, we took the longest trip we have yet in our little T-1350 - about 6 hours away into the mountains of NE New Mexico again. Shelley wanted to make my 60th a special one, so she bought me a photo tour with Geraint Smith of Geraint Smith Photography in Taos, NM. He's been an online friend of ours for 8 years or so.

We stayed in Taos Valley RV Park right there in Taos. It can handle some pretty big rigs, but maneuvering in the park may be a challenge for the bigger ones. Our little 1350 didn't have any problem, as you would expect. We don't normally care for RV parks, but this one wasn't like most of the others that pack you in like sardines. There was actually a feel of separation between spots here.

The trip over was pleasant, as there was little or no wind to fight as there so often is in this part of the country. We took I-40W out of Amarillo, then headed North on 84 just West of Santa Rosa, NM. It was kind of a ho-hum drive (typical high desert country) until we got about half way up between I-40 and Las Vegas. That's when the scenery really starts changing as we get into the Sangre de Cristos. The jaw dropper came when we headed North out of Mora on NM 518. Getting into the Santa Fe National Forest is absolute breathtaking! NM 518 is a good road, albeit a winding mountain road. There are numerous pull-offs where you can take in the view.

On the way back, we took the northern route - starting off on US 64E through Cimarron Canyon State Park, where we've stayed before - our previous "longest" trip. Winding across the northern tip of the SF Nat'l Forest was slow going (20-30 mph much of the way), but well worth it. Beautiful country up there, but not what I call a relaxing drive - not until we got to Angel Fire anyway. Much easier drive from there on. Across the mountains, there were many hairpins and often no guardrails, but the road was plenty wide for two vehicles. It will just keep you on your toes. I think when we go up there in the future, we'll take the southern I-40 route and go North by Santa Rosa. The roads were better in general, and more relaxing to drive. I'll get a few pics in this thread when I get to it.

The little camper did well, and most of the time I wouldn't know she was back there if I didn't look. When we stopped for gas, tires, bearings and everything were perfect. No issues at all.

This was a great trip for my milestone.

There is more room that it looks like in these spots. Plenty of room to set up grill, canopy, and all the things we normally do.

Looking back into the park. Just out of view of this shot (to the right) are 30-40' motor homes, a full-size school bus, and various large TT's.

Here is the layout of the RV Park. Strange that they don't have it on their web site.

This is a pretty decent place to stay.
