Tacoma

I have a 2012 Tacoma with the tow package and an electric brake setup. I'd like to tow a 24 ft. Sunline with it. Mostly East coast. Is it feasible? Anyone doing it?

Thanks for your time.

I see the Tacoma has a rating of 6400 lbs with the tow package. But, I think your limiting factor of the Tacoma will be tongue weight even with the weight distribution hitch. Looking at some 24' Sunline models, I see the weight can vary between 700-900 lbs. You will want to check the tongue weight rating of your truck hitch. The other issue with the Tacoma will be the short wheelbase may cause some instability. IMHO, I think you will be right at your realistic towing limit with that combination. The truck may get it done but you may not be very happy with the performance. Hope this helps...

I tow a T1700 with a Tacoma and a 6 spd. To me it is a good match I know of people who tow 24' campers with the Tacoma but it will be a hand full.Maybe some of the new feather light things but it won't be a blazing performer. The T1700 needs no WD hitch or anti sway but I'm guessing it would be mandatory with any thing much bigger. Does your Tacoma have the 4 leaf rear spring pack? I think even the 14's still had a 3 leaf spring I had mine replaced with less than 1200 miles on it under a TSB that stated "harsh ride".

I had a 2005 Tacoma with the spring TSB and a 24' would bury a Tacoma's springs, given what I've seen with my T-1950 and another trailer with a heavier pin weight. The Tacoma is going to really grunt dragging the trailer around, too. I had a Tacoma when I brought the 1950 home and a Tundra before the first trip if that means anything. A 20' trailer for me is in the doable range with a Tacoma (but not ideal) a 24'er is outside the range of what I'd even try with a Tacoma.

Ditto Mr Osier

I also tow my 1950 w/ a Tundra but mine's an '06 w/ the .4.7 liter V-8
On the flats we move along OK but lose it on hills. I only get 10mpg as perhaps the small V-8 is bit overworked w/ the bed of truck fully loaded under a heavy fiberglass cap & a canoe overhead. I wouldn't consider towing anything heavier

Don't feel bad with 10 mph. With my 5.7l Tundra I have broke 10 mph only once or twice and that is only with real gas (no ethanol). Usually with canoe, topper and camper I get 9, but I have plenty of power.

I have a 2005 Tundra double cab. I have pulled my new to me 1996 T-2053 a short distance of about 50 miles on highway, country roads, streets, flat terrain and some rather hilly terrain as well. It towed OK.

I wouldn't use it on anything heavier personally. The tow was from the seller's house to mine, thus not a "camping ready" load. About as light as it and truck combo will ever be.

My 2005 Tundra gets about 15 miles/gal. going from work to home on country/town/street driving.

I haven't kept track of it pulling my 1983 T-1550 in the hills and dells of New England and Up-state NY, but I'm guessing that about 10 miles/gal. isn't all by much.

The T-2053 may actually be a little lighter or just a small amount heavier than the T-1950.

I was interested in both models.

I'm not sure where I would cut off towing with the Tacoma. The T-2053 is as heavy as I care to pull with my Tundra 4.7 though.

That's about right from what I have heard from others 10-12 is about what everyone gets no matter what they tow with or what they tow it with. If I go really slow I can get maybe 14 with my Tacoma. I agree, the Tundra is a good bit heavier than a Tacoma and with anything less than a really heavy dually big truck it would be a good idea to keep the trailer weight below or close to the truck weight. I have no doubt that I could pull the rated 6500# with my Tacoma but that is where it ends. A loaded hay wagon at 10 MPH is a lot different than a 6000# camper on the highway if anything goes wrong the truck is going for a ride behind the camper.
