Smile Sunline sightings

While returning to PA from Portsmouth, NH today - Sunday, August 11 - we saw three Sunlines on the road:

-- a 2000s-vintage model on I-95 North in New Hampshire around 8:30 am;
-- a 1990s-vintage Sunline on I-84 East in New York, around noon;
-- a 1980s-vintage model on I-80 East in PA, around 2:00 pm.

Any SOC members, perhaps? Hope it was happy camping!

Yesterday a nice Sunline 5th wheel passed me on I-75 a bit north of Midland, MI, around 6 P.M. By the time I realized it was a Sunline, I could not tell what the TW was. Was that anybody here?

Saw a Sunline pulling out of the campground in Banff, Alberta last week. I was headed in the wrong direction to get a model or license plate location but it was bigger than my 1950. There must have been a rv rally going on. Lots of American plates from Florida, Texas, Georgia, California and many others. A fleet of airstreams plus just about everything else. Chatted with a couple from New Hampshire who had just purchased a new Escape brand trailer. You can only get those direct from the factory in Vancouver. By order only, 9 month wait. They really wanted that trailer!

I saw two over this past weekend, one being yours! Looks like she's sporting the new tires now!

The other was a very clean looking '82 15.5' SB on 75 north, around the 180 mile marker yesterday afternoon. Glad to see it still sported at least one original hubcap.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm seeing fewer Sunlines as the years go by. They've been out of business for 11 years now, so that cuts out a good part of the market-those who will only buy new or a few years old.

Yeah, it started up here in the mid 2000s, since they really didn't sell very many up this way after about 2000/2001. It does seem like the majority of people who travel with their trailers usually want them only up to a few years old. I think compared to other trailers of comparable age, there are still quite a few more Sunlines still on the road.

Noob to Sunlines so never noticed before, but was actually surprised to see three on my last camping trip. Guess it helps that I was camping in PA! Two 1950's and another unknown model (to me)

Hi Rich,

I have not noticed a real change yet. This may be a regional thing. Here in Ohio it is not common ever to see many Sunlines. Having 2 or 3 in a 300 some site campground was a rarity. In fact the most ever is in the same CG is the OH or MI meet and greets I think.

That said last week I ended up making a trip across NY and the NW corner of PA. My Sunline radar is always on and I did see a few on the NY state thruway which is about all I would see over the last 10 years or so.

But in eastern to mid PA, this is a different story or at least was. When we pulled into Cowans Gap SP it was Sunline land, oh my gosh they where everywhere... And they saw me in this really long Sunline and I'm sure thought, how is he going to get that in here...

I must say though, I see more older tan Sunlines still in use then I see any other brand of that era. Seems the Sunlines hold together longer then most.

I do not recall the year Sunline stopped the tan Sunnies and when all white. I'm sure Sunline Fan has this info in his Sunline data banks... (his head LOL)

Thanks

John

I suppose more Sunlines were delivered to dealers in central PA than anywhere else, so it's pretty much a given that when we are out camping (which is, more often than not, in central PA) we see at least one. I usually strike up a conversation with them and sometimes they just think of their camper as a camper, other times, they are knowledgeable of the Sunline brand, maybe fixing up an older one.

What I find interesting is that on this site, whenever there's a post about a restoration job, it seems to be the older, tan models (which, according to the brochure files, changed in 1990 to white, or as Sunline called it "light gray"). So yes, the tan models are still popular and probably more so than other brands of the 80's (maybe they just aren't holding up after all these years)

Yes, tan ran from 1983-1989. Before that was off white, then gray from 1990-91, and the polar white we all know and love from 1992 on.

Light gray from 90 to 91? I didn't know that and if I ever saw one didn't realize it wasn't the same white used on all the rest.
I think 90 was also the first year for Krystal Kote.

Yes, 1990 was the first year for Krystal Kote.

I never asked why they changed, even though light gray was a very '90s thing, but it does always look dirty. Here's an example:

I see Sunlines on a fairly regular basis here in Maryland.

My camper has the original dealer sticker on it: Recreation World out of Annapolis, Maryland. Not terribly far from Denver, Pennsylvania.

Rich,

Your post about the old campers triggered something.

Sunline Fan, do you know the model year Sunline switched from metal roof to rubber roof?

And do you know the years, that Sunline "did not" have a gutter rail on the camper? You said to me at one time, the older camper never had a gutter rail.

And then there is what year the back the camper had a rounded roof to rear wall joint and then newer ones where squared off roof to rear wall.

Where I'm going with this is the methods the way the front and rear seam and the sides of the camper have changed over the years. Even the non Sunline brands have changed from metal to rubber. When rubber came on the scene the whole industry moved to rubber and the methods used to seal up the campers are very close to the same regardless of the manufacture.

I know a lot about the rubber roof campers and how they fail from a leak. And a lot of this had to do with the owners never knowing they had to stay right on top of all the caulking joints or else... and they have to wash the rubber often.

The metal roof campers may have had better joints and where made different that where more tolerant to lack of roof maintenance. Thus it took them a lot longer to get a water infection from sealants failures.

Thanks

John

Yay, a research project!

Wasn't a cut and dry switch. First record I show of a one piece rubber roof is model year 1992. The Elixir embossed, baked enamel painted metal roof was used on 15-22' trailers up through 1995. For some reason, I seem to recall hearing the 7' wide models (T-1550, 1700, and 1740) in 1996 used metal too, but I don't have paperwork to confirm. So, by 1996-97, all roofs were rubber, unless special ordered by Kitty!

Hmm, I may have misspoke. They have as far as I can remember, they just didn't have the turnouts until more recently. It looks like around 2000.

2000. 1999 was the last year for the rounded rear roofs. However, 1994 was the first year of the slim rounded roof. The radius was much larger on 1993 and older. I think this coincided with Sunline standardizing all showers with full plastic enclosures, and in order to fit enclosures or cabinets along the back wall, they needed a square corner. The ceiling in 1993 and older went on a 45 to meet the wall for maybe 8", along the back wall. In 1994, the inside ceiling/wall meet was squared off, even with the slight radius outside.

Not the best example, but you can see here at 1:02, how the rearmost cabinet next to the bed is cut on a 45:
